A Japanese man has been sentenced to death for a stabbing rampage in 2016 which resulted in the death of 19 disabled people at a care home.
Satoshi Uematsu said people with disabilities who were unable to communicate well had no human rights, said broadcaster Kyodo.
The 30-year old had once worked in the care facility, located near Tokyo.
The case is one of Japan's worst mass killings and has shocked people in a country where violent crime is rare.
In an earlier interview with Japan's Mainichi Shimbun newspaper, Uematsu had said there was "no point in living" for people with mental disabilities and that he "had to do it for the sake of society".
The Yokohama District Court on Monday ordered him to death by hanging.
Uematsu previously said he did not plan to appeal against any verdict or sentence.
'He abused marijuana' During the trial earlier this year, the former employee of the Sagamihara care home did not dispute that he stabbed his victims.
But his defence team pleaded not guilty, citing their client's mental state. They said he had been under the influence of drugs at the time.
"He abused marijuana and suffered from mental illness," his lawyer said.
"He was in a condition in which either he had no capacity to take responsibility or such a capacity was significantly weakened."
There were traces of marijuana found in his blood after the attack.

Just hang him! Good thing Japan still has the death penalty, unlike enlightened Europeans.
Its gonna be swift. Japan doesnt put up with our ACLU nonsense.
I wouldnt recommend breaking the law in Japan.
Up the long ladder,
Down the short rope...
I like hanging. None of that touchy feely American lethal injection garbage.
“I like hanging. None of that touchy feely American lethal injection garbage.”
I also like that they don’t give a rip about marijuana use or insanity as a mitigating circumstance.
No, he won’t be sitting on death row for 30yrs or so like here in Cali. He won’t have to think about it for very long.
Funny that violent crimes are rare in a country so rich in martial arts.
Japan is a country where violent crime is unheard of. You can walk the streets in the dead of night and feel completely safe.
This was unusual by Japanese standards.
Hanging is effective and very inexpensive. I wish we would get rid of the injections and return to hanging or firing squad. (Or stamping press. Quick, but messy.)
average time japanese are on death row before execution is 7 or 8 years
Homogeneous society and intact culture.
Do the Japanese have the moral fortitude to walk the walk? Well see.
“Funny that violent crimes are rare in a country so rich in martial arts.”
It’s because of their homogeneous population. They haven’t allowed their country to become a garbage dump.
Japan doesn’t give a execution date. The warden just shows up at the cell on no day in particular and says “it’s time” and that’s it.
I’d hate to see what the guy would be like without the marijuana.
that is the torture
they are not told when they will be executed.
Every day is possible execution day.
The warden has his staff prepare things and, when ready, informs the inmate that his time has come he has about 30 minutes to meditate, take his final dump or whatever else he wants to do.
A couple of guards then come and escort him down the hall and on a short elevator ride to one of the upper rooms of the prison which looks like a sparse office furnished with a desk and a few chairs for handful of chosen witnesses. There is a painted box on the floor where a trapdoor is outlined. A man at the desk operates an electronic control panel which opens and drops the noose which has been prepared in advance with a sandbag comparable to the inmate's weight. It drops taunt and the inmate delivers his last words if he desires. One guard then fits the prisoner with a hood, the other with a noose. The inmate asks if he is ready and he gives a slight bow of his neck to indicate that he is.
The man at the desk and others seated on chairs in the room then push multiple buttons to spring the trap door. Nobody knows which one actually opens the door except another guard who is not present and has set up the switch in advance. He will never tell.
The door is sprung, the inmate drops and dies instantly from a proper hanging. Everyone leaves the room and allows him to swing for 30 minutes when a doctor and team of guards enter, haul him up, lay him on a gurney and pronounce him dead. Photos will be taken to close the file and supply to the next of kin if requested. The body is then sent to the crematorium.
The next of kin are contacted and informed that the execution has been completed. A press release is then issued. Often this is done with multiple gallows birds in multiple prisons on the same day to blunt the impact of the tiny anti death penalty crowd in Japan.
