Trump disbanded NSC pandemic unit that experts had praised

WASHINGTON -- Public health and national security experts shake their heads when President Donald Trump says the coronavirus "came out of nowhere" and “blindsided the world.”

They've been warning about the next pandemic for years and criticized the Trump administration's decision in 2018 to dismantle a National Security Council directorate at the White House charged with preparing for when, not if, another pandemic would hit the nation.

“It would be nice if the office was still there,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institute of Health, told Congress this week. “I wouldn't necessarily characterize it as a mistake (to eliminate the unit). I would say we worked very well with that office.”

Trump Signs Executive Order To Improve Flu Vaccines

President Donald Trump yesterday issued an executive order directing the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to overhaul seasonal flu vaccine production and urge more Americans to be vaccinated.

The executive order, titled “Modernizing Influenza Vaccines in the United States to Promote National Security and Public Health,” promotes new vaccine manufacturing technologies to support more robust vaccines and advances the development of vaccines that provide longer lasting coverage against a broad range of flu viruses.

Weaknesses in current production methods

In the executive order, President Trump emphasized that each year, flu vaccines prevent millions of illnesses and thousands of deaths. It also acknowledged that a deadly flu pandemic could inflict trillions of dollars of damage on the economy.

“Unfortunately, many of the vaccines we use today are produced overseas, using time-consuming, egg-based technology, which limits their effectiveness and makes production too slow to effectively combat a potential deadly influenza pandemic,” the White House said in a statement.

In a related fact sheet, Trump said, “We want a safe and healthy future for every American family.”

Improving flu vaccines and developing universal formulations was part of proposed Senate bill last year that would have invested $1 billion in research over the next 5 years.

Speeding up production, advancing better vaccines

The goals of overhauling flu vaccine production will reduce reliance on time-consuming egg-based vaccine production. Also, the White House said improved production speed could help experts better match vaccines to the most current circulating strains.

For example, earlier this year, World Health Organization (WHO) vaccine advisors delayed their recommendation for the H3N2 vaccine strain by a month, due to rising numbers of genetically and antigenically diverse viruses. In doing so, it warned that the move could delay flu vaccine production by 2 to 4 weeks.

A more closely matched vaccine is an important part of making the vaccines more effective. Flu vaccines are known to provide moderate protection, at about 54%, though effectiveness varies by year, with performance especially uneven against H3N2 viruses.

Also, the Trump Administration said it will advance the development of new more effective vaccines.

In 2012, a group led by the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), which publishes CIDRAP News, led a group that published an in-depth analysis of problems with current flu vaccines and steps needed to develop a game-changing flu vaccine with the potential to blunt the impact of a future pandemic.

The White House said President Trump is establishing a task force to identify priorities and monitor progress.

HHS to take lead

In a separate statement yesterday, HHS Secretary Alex Azar said that under the order, HHS will lead the coordination of efforts to modernize flu vaccine production.

“President Trump’s executive order to modernize influenza vaccine manufacturing reflects his commitment both to America’s national security and to America’s health,” he said.

Tom Inglesby, MD, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, on Twitter today said the executive order was good and strong, requiring a new plan for faster manufacturing, improving public understanding about flu and promoting better coverage, government study of vaccine effectiveness and costs, and a lot more.

Actually—Napoleon was one of the most competent men to ever walk the earth. I think “Napoleon Syndrome” is all people know about him (that he was short). Actually he was amazingly effective (mostly). Even when he was banished to some godforsaken island—he immediately created an army, school system, infrastructure. . .

I have an open mind about Fauci (so far).

Thanks all for some interesting details. One thing that surprises me is that I have heard NO mention of 3 Chinese studies being done on the effectiveness of high dosage and IV Vitamin C. Other research has shown that high dose C is useful against any virus. Of course Big Pharma would be unhappy if low cost, over-the-counter Vitamin C turned out to be effective.

Went shopping late last night, good social distancing among the shoppers, NO TOILET PAPER. Don’t these people know that Covid19 is a respiratory infection, not a bowel disease? Shesh!

John Bolton eliminated that position to streamline the NSC

OR, a conspiracy minded person might wonder if Bolton, with his close ties to deep state intelligence sources, was complicit in removing the position on the pretext of streamlining the NSC because he was part of network of deep state insiders who were setting the stage to release a pathogen Trump didn't know about, couldn't control, and would ultimately be blamed.

Snopes has a pro-Democrat bias. If it makes Democrats look good and Republicans look bad, Snopes will be creative about facts, meaning, and how far they examine a issue.

"Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer abruptly departed from his post leading the global health security team on the National Security Council in May 2018 amid a reorganization of the council by then-National Security Advisor John Bolton, and Ziemer’s team was disbanded. Tom Bossert, whom the Washington Post reported “had called for a comprehensive biodefense strategy against pandemics and biological attacks,” had been fired one month prior."

A NSC biological warfare group lead by a Admiral is not duplicating work by the CDC or NIH. They were working on biological warfare defense planning.

It’s amazing to me how the fake news can write an innuendo headline in a manner to create a said narrative, then still place in it quotes from the people most involved that completely debunk the whole narrative.

The idea that a pandemic is a national security matter in a country that doesn’t even protect its own borders is laughable.

“They’ve been warning about the next pandemic for years and criticized the Trump administration’s decision in 2018 to dismantle a National Security Council directorate at the White House charged with preparing for when, not if, another pandemic would hit the nation.”

Perhaps it was decided those duties were better handled by another agency. Perhaps it was found many of the functions were being unnecessarily being duplicated. Perhaps somebody raised their hand and asked “Where was this guy when H1N1 scare was going on?”

Sounds like the same idiocy that put FEMA under the new Homeland Security atrocity and then we're supposed to wonder why there were so many foul-ups during Katrina.

Thanks Skeletor for "leading" the Katrina efforts.

Has it ever occurred to you that maybe, just maybe, governments and people all over the world are taking action...

Taking action is great. Definitive solutions what is needed. Constantly finding and posting obscure journalists tweets, left-wing fake news articles, hearsay reports from anonymous unnamed panicked foreign sources, breathless, fear mongering, negative, end of the world assertions with implied attacks on President Trump is wrong and needs to stop.

There are many other organizations whose duties include watching out for epidemics, esp. the World Health Organization, something within the European Union, Pan-African health organizations who deal with diseases, locust, drought, water problems (pollution etc.). NATO also has biological/chemical warfare components who watch the old Soviet Union, Red China, No. Korea, Pakistan, Iran and Syria, among other nations.

You can bet the Israelis have very similar agencies who watch the Islamic world/extremists, esp. Syria and Iran.

The same for So. Korea, Rep. of China, Taiwan, the Philippines and even Vietnam, India, Pakistan (re India), and everyone is watching ISIS, the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

In regards to the US organizations concerning health issues, national and worldwide, WE ARE NOT ALONE!

The attack on Pres. Trump and the NSC pandemic unit is almost nothing but political leftists and anti-Trumpers getting cheap shots while we have a national problem and they stand around and do nothing, or did nothing in the past.

I am amazed at how fast the President, VP, DHS, DHHS, NIH, (FEMA is in there too), and state organizations have gotten their acts together and speeded up things (by getting rid of stupid regulations and bureaucratic roadblocks) to address the Coronavirus crisis.

Obama didn’t so this with the Ebola crisis and many others.

That looks like a DoD mission to me. Plans and operations are the center point of the military.
