Every Briton over the age of 70 will be told "within the coming weeks" to stay at home for an extended period to shield them from coronavirus Health Secretary Matt Hancock says.
He told the BBC the rules will not come into force just yet but when it does it will last "a very long time".
The government has faced pressure to do more to tackle the epidemic after the UK death toll rose to 21 on Saturday.
All deaths so far have been of people over 60 or with underlying conditions.
Over-70s - and younger people with certain health conditions - will be told they must remain at home and have groceries and vital medication delivered.
The health secretary was asked by the BBC's Andrew Marr when the new requirement - reported to last as long as four months - would begin.
He said: "I'm not going to go into any more detail on the timings because we want to be ready to say that when we judge, based on the scientific advice, that the time has come."
"We know that when you ask people to do this sort of thing that they tire of it, it also has negative impacts," he added.
And speaking of broader measures designed to combat the virus, Mr Hancock warned: "Every single person in this country is going to be affected and they are going to have to do things."

No, but we don’t tend to touch our faces with our elbows. Not the pointy side, anyway.
“Every Briton over the age of 70 will be told “within the coming weeks” to stay at home for an extended period to shield them from coronavirus Health Secretary Matt Hancock says. “
Every PERSON in the world over the age of 70 already has plenty of things that could kill them; heart attacks, strokes, the Big C, senility. What difference will one more way to die make to a senior.
Over 70s don’t go out much anyway. It’s all their loved ones and caregivers can do to interest them in senior events. So what’ll happen if they go to a senior event and mix with other seniors, and one of them spreads the Corona virus around? At least they’ll have had a good time before kicking it. Met some new friends, reconnected with some old.
Bottom line: We’re all going to die sometime. It’s having a life worth living that’s important, and if I were over 70, I’d rather die in good company than in isolation. Death’ll get everyone sooner or later, no matter what they do.
So get a G—d—mn grip already. Corona, shmorona.
Beau just turned 60, I will in a few months. We, too, live VERY rural. If I go out once a week, it’s a LOT. If he goes out, it’s usually to buy a truck or equipment part or to go hunting.
We grow a lot of our own food, I cook from scratch, can bake bread, all the basics, etc. We would just need an infusion of eggs and milk.
I can’t imagine much will change for us, either.
We DID attend two sparsely-attended funerals, yesterday. All of the ‘older folks’ stayed home, which is good.
Really feels like lovers of totalitarian government have gotten a booster shot of power and want to exercise more of their dictatorial powers.
Thats certainly whats keeping this panic going. Suddenly theyve found that keeping everybody cowering in their homes, separate and isolated, as well as impoverishing a large number of us, is the key to total control.
I wonder if the reason theyre trying particularly to isolate the over 70s is that were of the generation that still remembers freedom, with an orderly society based on a shared morality and ethic, and a society where people had families, participated in things, and cared about each other. Cant have that, now, might conflict with Holy Mother the State.
“WuFlu” ...
I like that!
The Wuhan China P4 Virus has crippled much of the Western world and disrupted the 2020 election without firing a single shot or placing a single Facebook ad.
...
In the meantime, China is getting back to business.
Actually, all in the last 2 months, the Shanghai Index lost "only" 10% of its value since covid-19 began, made it ALL back, and then dropped 5% again.
The Dow Jones has lost 25% of its value in 3 weeks, and the bounce back has only been 7% so far.
The difference seems noteworthy to me.
And we will as well. Just in a few weeks.
Hopefully sanity will return to the UK very soon once this new flu has peaked.
I think it would help if Trump stopped listening to his worrisome, hand-wringing, politically panicked advisers and started making more public statements about not panicking and using common sense, and faith in God to see us through this thing mentioning that the annual flu is a greater threat right now than this COVID-19.
He should say appropriate steps have already been taken, watchfulness continues, and there’s no need to turn America into a Nazi prison camp like the Delusional Lying Left would love to do.
Not to mention you have to get pretty close to someone to elbow bump. Just nod and smile....from a safe distance.
BTW, that's a good descirption of American society under her Free Constitutional Republic before the Delusional and Ungodly Lying Left took over beginning around 1900.
Only faith and freedom can restore our truly "great society" (FREE society, not government society) and only the Divine Providence of God Almighty can make that happen. It's too big a problem for man. I pray and believe God will take a hand as I believe God yet has plans for America in these last days.
I’ve owned solar panels since the early 1980’s. Bought them new, surplus from Los Alamos.
We have a generator too. I don’t expect to use it, but can in emergency.
The common sense is not in China.
The common sense is being applied in the USA. And in Texas my Texas.
Thats very true. I too pray that people will come back to God, because faith is really the only foundation of a society. Even Jefferson, who was at best a Deist, thought that US society could not function without the mass of men adhering to (Greco-Roman Judeo Christian) religion, and felt that it was very important to protect it as the source of the fundamental ethics and morality necessary for a democratic republic.
Maybe this will be a wake-up call.
The first time was for life. That was 47 years.
Expect this lasts till I go.
It is already mind boggling how great it is.
The wedding is the day before Easter Sunday.
Has been planned for many months. I did not express it correctly. It is in April. (not an April fool joke)
My fiancee works, has a good job. And she is a great cook. And as good at a great deal more.
Thank you.
