Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the Tokyo Olympic Games will go ahead as planned in July, despite coronavirus concerns resulting in the postponement of sporting events.
Abe added the International Olympic Committee (IOC) would have the final decision whether Tokyo 2020 goes ahead.
"We will overcome the spread of the infection and host the Olympics without problem, as planned," Abe said.
Japan has had more than 1,400 cases and 28 deaths resulting from coronavirus.
The Tokyo Games is expected to cost about 1.35 trillion yen (£10.26bn) ..

Hurray!
Sorry Shinzo...once the athletes start pulling out due to the risk (which will happen soon) - your Olympics will be canceled
Well, I’m sure they figure this spread of the disease will have abated by July. I’m sure it’s unthinkable to cancel the Olympics, assuming that life will get back to normal soon.
Good for hAbe......this shutting down everything is stupid. The left has always said, we will not cave into threats from terrorist and alike which use fear..we will continue with our daily lives...........seems they have flipped because they think they can use it to get rid of Trump...
butbutbutbutbut exponential!!!! butbutbutbut Black Swan!!!!
Ain’t it embarrassing to see red-blooded Americans cowering in fear, pissing their pants, and then to be shown up by our one-time enemy, who exhibits backbone?
Baloney! Olympic class athletes are by definition some of the most healthy people in the world. Very, very low chance of infection or serious illness from the Wuhan Flu.
The Coronavirus and queer males competing in women’s events will ruin it either way.
Finally another leader who hasn’t drunk the koolaid.
Nice, hold an Olympics, but nobody but locals come
Will there be an audience?
Coronavirus won’t survive summer temperatures. Global Warming will help us kick this thing.

If things get worse, they can always cancel if the really had to - but it’s nice to give people hope and something to look forward to; the Olympics is a big symbol of world normalcy, in a way.
Take it as it comes.
Yeah, because its winter in the Philippines. Lol.
People ordinarily in good health can still catch and pass on the virus, even if they don't get serious problems with it themselves. If the virus is still around there will be pressure on athletes not to go there, get infected, and bring the virus home.
Plus, the athletes countries send to the Olympics will be determined months before. If heats and matches are cancelled due to COVID19, who's going to be going to Tokyo? I'm not saying the Games will definitely be cancelled, but there's still a chance that they might.
By July this will either have finished (99.9999%) or be well on the way to finishing us (whatever % is left). So yeah, might as well.
IOC Rules Committee: Uh...about that...
