Spread of coronavirus ‘much worse’ than Ebola, expert claims

The global spread of the coronavirus is “much, much worse” than seen with Ebola — which, unlike COVID-19, “requires very close contact for transmission,” according to the professor who helped discover the earlier illness.

Professor Peter Piot, director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, told Sky News that the coronavirus pandemic has the potential to turn into a “really bad situation.”

“This is much, much worse than Ebola,” he said. “Ebola requires very close contact for transmission.

People are very scared of it, but frankly it is usually very contained. There are some exceptions. But because (COVID-19) is a respiratory transmitted virus, that makes it so worrisome.

From what I read, covid-19 is extremely contagious. Something like 10 times easier to transmit than the flu.

On the other hand, you’re very likely to recover from covid-19, whereas ebola causes you to bleed from your eyes and die.

Odd choice for comparison.

Ebola never made it to Italy, South Korea, France, etc.

Precisely! Ebola never made it out of town, so to speak.

Ebola disables people and kills them so quickly that they don’t have time to infect a lot of people. Not a good comparison. Disingenuous.

Well, duh. And the global spread of an ordinary cold is even moreso. The issue isn’t mere spread, it is spread*mortality, or even spread*maiming such as with polio.

Ebola outbreaks were horrible...nearly 100% fatality rate in a particularly gruesome manner for a dozen or a hundred people, until the last big one which got over ten thousand at around 50%. They were geographically isolated as well.

You are absolutely correct. It’s something to be taken seriously but not this madness. And comparing a disease where blood pours out of your orifices and eyes to this virus is a little extreme.

I know he is comparing how easily or not they are both spread but it’s a ridiculous comparison in any sense. One is so much more lethal than the other

Odd choice for comparison.

It's harder for your hair to catch on fire if you're thinking rationally, hence,
