Full Title: People who fully recover from the coronavirus can be left with '20 to 30%' less lung function, and gasping for breath when they walk quickly, Hong Kong doctors find.
People who recover from the coronavirus can still be left with substantially reduced lung functions, Hong Kong Hospital Authority have found after observing the first wave of discharged patients.
The doctors found a drop of 20% to 30% in lung capacity in two or three out of those 12 patients.

Have a friend in Hong Kong who went thru the SARS epidemic in the early 2000s. Was a rough time for a whole lot of people there.
The operative word is “can”.
Heard it in a report by a seemingly credible citizen reporter on YouTube.
Who knows what is really true.. Officials keep changing the statistics. In example, how long the virus lives on surfaces went from 9 days, then 2 hours, then 3 hours, then back to 9 days.
Why yes I did. How did you know?
“Why yes I did. How did you know? “
From your ‘expert’ medical opinion!
I’ve been wondering about that. I have family members who still have scar tissue in their lungs from various infections they had decades ago. It’s to be expected that at least some covid patients would have some kind of permanent lung damage.
Thanks. It's good to be appreciated for my mind and not just my amazing good looks.
By the way; have you ever met anyone with COPD and noticed they have a hard time breathing even with their permanent oxygen machine/bottle when the exert themselves even a little bit? Doesn't take an MD to tell there would be a similarity hence the COPD-like statement.
“.......this virus was created to take out the President.”
I know this is Aluminum hat stuff but I can’t get my feminine instinct to stop stirring around in my gut. China? Soros? Democrats? Cabals? The media? All of them? My rational mind is not working 100% right now.
The only way anyone could know this is if the patients had been given pulmonary function tests recently before they got the virus and then compare that to a pulmonary function test done about a year after they recovered.
In other words, this article is bulls#it.
Quick everybody panic!!!
Well done. I see you are a student of Thomas Sowell.
Just for background, I have two degrees and have worked in many aspects of healthcare from direct patient care to IT over several decades, I have had to examine and write medical papers, so while I am not an expert on a given facet, I am knowledgeable and can at least be conversant in many of them and allow that to play a part in forming an opinion.
And starting from that title, yes. That made me angry. If they had more specifics (or even specifics from people who seem to want to defend that garbage from Yahoo) and details they should have supplied them. But they don't. And they don't, because they don't have them.
And what they do have in the article and the way they present it is asinine. Any medical person with experience who reads that article will likely have the same reaction I did, that is "What kind of crap is this?" I can tell you with certainty that this has no value other than to scare people. It tells medical people NOTHING, it tells policy makers NOTHING, but it sure as hell tells people who have no bank of knowledge to call up and/or no context to medically place it in that if you get the coronavirus, up to 30% of the people who get it will have compromised lungs for the rest of their life.
And THAT scares the hell out of people, ESPECIALLY people who know what it is like to be compromised already. We already know that patients with underlying respiratory conditions are at higher risk for lethal complications, but that isn't what this article says. It says that if you get coronavirus, even if you fully recover from it, you could "be left with 20-30% less lung function". That is a quote.
And that is not only careless and cruel, it is criminal in this situation.
So, yes. That should make any NORMAL person angry, the preying (by way of ignorance or deliberate malice/disinformation) on helpless people who are already scared and yes, terrified.
I am glad to hear you are not "terrified" by the info. That is good.
I have explained to you why it is not only NOT valid AS PRESENTED IN THE ARTICLE (Yes, I did buck the trend FR is famous for and actually read it) with one doctor and a population of 12 patients, but ZERO/ZILCH/NADA in the way of history, controls, or any rigid analysis at all. I would challenge you to find me a single credible medical person who has read that article who would say anything more complimentary than "Sure, people may have loss of lung function after recovering from the coronavirus, but nowhere in that article does it say anything that supports it."
And I was wrong about one thing: that the posted article has zero value. Actually, it would have great value in a legitimate discussion of the misuse (or just as likely, mal-use) of media and information and the effect that has on a population that lacks the capacity to view it critically.
Hardly any young people get severe cases or need hospitalization.
I know this is Aluminum hat stuff...
Look up Operation Large Area Coverage sometime.
I would challenge you to find me a single credible medical person who has read that article who would say anything more complimentary than “Sure, people may have loss of lung function after recovering from the coronavirus, but nowhere in that article does it say anything that supports it.”
Ill go out a precarious limb and suggest that Dr may also consider these were Chinese patients where smoking is common among near 50% of the population and air pollution on the BEST day is hundreds of times worse than the USA and THESE facts may play a teeny part in this virus caused lung damage.
China and U.N. holding Pandemic games last Fall is kinda suspicious. China and the Deep State have tried almost Everything to get rid of our President.. They would stop at nothing.. they are fighting for their own survival.. They hate us for stopping their Evil agenda.
Perhaps you are not aware of the sarcasm of asking if someone once stayed at a Holiday Inn!
“Still not buying the hyped Bullsh!t.
Or yours for that matter.”
My Bull$hit? Maybe if youd do some research rather than take cheap shots at people that are telling the truth based upon research from professionals, you might learn something other than referencing them as projecting bull$hit.
My information comes from WEBMD, the most used medical information center in the US. The article will give you, if you bother to read it, a lot of information about colds, flu and pnuemonia.
https://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/flu-complications#1
It will reference lung scars which are a product of pneumonia and, in another article I read, from the cells sent in by the patients immune system to fight the virus. Hope it helps you to learn more about the illness.
rwood
That is likely true.
I would predict there is an entire host of valid reasons that these 2 or 3 out of 12 patients had a compromised respiratory system after recovering, but that article gave nothing-nothing about smoking, air pollution, COPD, emphysema, asthma, anything like that.
So the title states: “People who fully recover from the coronavirus can be left with ‘20 to 30%’ less lung function” based on those “two or three” patients.
An article read by millions of people not just here but all over the world, and the title suggests that you could have a deficit caused by lung damage.
Well, NO S***.
I am sure the people who find no issue with this article would say “Oh, it doesn’t say you “WILL”, it says you “CAN”.
You “can” die of pneumonia. You “can” throw a clot and stroke or get PE. You “can” get damaged testicles. You “can” burst an artery in your brain from coughing. “You “can” get divorced as a result of it. You “can” miss work and lose your job. You “can” get bad breath.
This made me angry. I’m glad many Freepers aren’t terrified or afraid, so this POS article won’t bother them at all.
But there are a lot of people who have been whipped into a circle of fear, especially elderly, and especially those who have health issues who would read that and think “I already have trouble breathing-what is this going to do to me?” because it sure does imply that you will be fully recovered with a new deficit.
All based on “2 or 3” patients out of 12.
God, this does make me angry.
Can someone get Coronavirus a second time?
so who are these 25%....are they people that had co-morbidness and needed ICU care to get better?...
