Full Title: People who fully recover from the coronavirus can be left with '20 to 30%' less lung function, and gasping for breath when they walk quickly, Hong Kong doctors find.

People who recover from the coronavirus can still be left with substantially reduced lung functions, Hong Kong Hospital Authority have found after observing the first wave of discharged patients.

The doctors found a drop of 20% to 30% in lung capacity in two or three out of those 12 patients.

Bob434, based on the article, this is NOT significant. It was either (at best) ignorant of Yahoo to spread it, or (at worst) deliberate fear mongering. There is no value, zero, in this article.

There is no middle ground when characterizing the methods or motives for that article.

This information is NOT significant or useful for dissemination by Yahoo or this thread.

We are fortunate here on FR because there are many here who have experience in different aspects of this (myself included) who can provide background and a little analysis to give it proper context (it is garbage) but there are millions of people who would see that and be unnecessarily terrified by it.

Reading that article made me angry, because you CANNOT make the statement they did based on what was discussed in the article. But Yahoo gave credence to that BS.

Most of the patients are 70-85 years old. They have a limited life span, which will be made shorter by the after effects of the disease.

I see how this can affect some people that way, but a sample of 12?

This is also the notorious Yahoo! anti-Trump, anti-Conservative website of the MSM trying to hype the disease.

Yep, lots of that going around in the media.

Concern is appropriate. Panic is not.

Thing is, people like you see this and it validates your lack of a knowledge based opinion on these things, so you think it is fine. I suspect you find value in having people terrified by this completely invalid piece disseminated by Yahoo, simply because you think people aren’t panicked enough and need to be prodded more towards your panic.

Yours is an ignorance-based opinion if you gave that article any credence whatsoever.

Thinking that spreading stupidity (and yes, that is exactly what that article is) is constructive in any way demonstrates a lack of seriousness and intellectual capability to engage and discuss the subject.

“Because Chinese people can’t make the “W” sound?”

That’s not true at all.

The same character is pronounced with the w if it is the second character in a word.

I believe it too. Sen cotton was right when he said it was discovered in wuhan..with chink biology labs in the area and it was meant for the US.

How could they know this? Did they pick people, test their lung capacity, then infect them with covid 19, then wait until they recovered then tested their lung capacity again? Because unless they did this? Logical thinking.

This was identified with the SARS and MERS outbreaks, and I believe is associated with patients whose pneumonia advances to ARDS and/or causes significant pulmonary fibrosis. These are the patients who end up on respirators. So, it’s possible some less serious patients end up with some level of damage, but the 20%-30% reduction probably only applies to the “serious” cases. I pointed this out a month ago when I looked into the long term outcomes of SARS and ARDS. I’m sure doctors have known this from early on.

We need treatments and drugs that prevent COVID-19 from advancing to severe pneumonia and ARDS. That solves both the ICU/Ventilator shortage and the long term impact of the disease. I suspect early intervention and aggressive anti-viral treatment is the answer, rather than virtually ignoring it until it becomes serious.

Yes, but it sounds funnier if you imagine Johnny Carson saying it, in his best “Carnac the Magnificent” voice.

“found patterns similar to frosted glass in all of them, suggesting there was organ damage,”

if that’s all they’re going on, then this “report” is complete garbage: the so-called “ground glass” x-ray pattern is common for a large number of conditions (including inflammation), and does not necessarily mean a life-altering condition ... besides, lung inflammation after viral pneumonia can remain for quite some time after feeling better ...

to quote the link i below:

“Ground-glass opacification/opacity (GGO) is a descriptive term referring to an area of increased attenuation in the lung on computed tomography (CT) with preserved bronchial and vascular markings. It is a non-specific sign with a wide etiology including infection, chronic interstitial disease and acute alveolar disease.

Ground-glass opacities have a broad etiology:

normal expiration
partial filling of air spaces
partial collapse of alveoli
interstitial thickening
inflammation
edema
fibrosis
lepidic proliferation of neoplasm

https://radiopaedia.org/articles/ground-glass-opacification-3?lang=us

this is a garbage article and it’s sole purpose is to increase the panic being perpetuated by the fake stream enemedia ...

Recovery from pneumonia is usally full.

It can cause scaring and permanent damage, but not usually. My father had scaring on his lungs from pneumonia as a child.

Yup.. I’ve believed the virus was a bioweapon since mid-January when I first heard about it. I’m surprised (and relieved) the average person, who doesn’t pay much attention to what is going on in the world, brings it up unsolicited.

you say there is zero value- but i have heard other reports about this very issue too- We know that this virus is damaging lung tissue- not just from the above article but from what other doctors have said about this virus too- to what extent? We don’t know for certain yet- The fact that it’s damaging lungs so severely that people are dying from it tells us that even healthy people will suffer damage even if they survive- so I’m not sure where you are getting the idea there is zero value?

You said the article mad you mad- but didn’t explain why?

It’s fine to say there is no value, but you have to back that up with evidence to dispute it- not just give opinion- The article states that this virus is damaging lung tissue- that is a fact from everything we’ve heard so far on this from other sources- Again- to what extents? We don’t know yet- too early to tell- -

[[We are fortunate here on FR because there are many here who have experience in different aspects of this (myself included) who can provide background and a little analysis to give it proper context]]

Well, what is your opinion- does this virus cause lung damage or not? Others i n the thread have laid out how this virus attacks lung tissue-

We’re not ‘terrified’ by the info- We’re simply stating that info like this if valid, needs to be made available to others- if it’s not valid- please explain why? Does this virus not attack healthy lung tissue? What do you object to about the article- or other doctors unrelated to this article who have been making the same medical claims?

I don’t know if a child’s lungs are fully formed. If not, it would seem to me they would be more susceptible to damage.
