Full Title: People who fully recover from the coronavirus can be left with '20 to 30%' less lung function, and gasping for breath when they walk quickly, Hong Kong doctors find.

People who recover from the coronavirus can still be left with substantially reduced lung functions, Hong Kong Hospital Authority have found after observing the first wave of discharged patients.

The doctors found a drop of 20% to 30% in lung capacity in two or three out of those 12 patients.

I loathe adding to the hysteria but this is significant. One Quarter of those who survive will have a COPD-like lung condition; probably for the rest of their lives.

That's not what it says.

"Can be left with....."

Does not meet the journalistic requirements as a news story. Along with "could, may, possibly, might, should,", etc........

I didn’t see that assertion in his/her post that “the virus is nothing more than a cold”.

On the other hand, there is a huge amount of hysteria about this subject. It is entirely possible that the hysteria and public attitudes as a result of that hysteria are going to be far more damaging in the long run than the virus.

This article is crap, and a lot of Freepers on this thread have posted more than one reason on exactly why it is crap.

I don’t see how your post made any contribution to this thread.

” One Quarter of those who survive will have a COPD-like lung condition;”

Based on TWELVE patients? OMG more fear mongering.

There have been other coronaviruses, and their impact on lung function similar enough to draw conclusions about this one.

I hope for the best and that this small sampling is wrong for the masses but tell us what the other virus impact was. Worse, better, similar to what this states?

[[I loathe adding to the hysteria but this is significant.]]

Don’t loathe it- we need to be kept up to date on all the findings- this is significant- What we need to know is, did these patients get just a mild case of it, or were they quite severe- if it’s mild, then yeah, this is a big deal- those who breeze through it with only mild symptoms could end up with diminished lung capacity- this is no small deal IF thsi is true- and thanks for posting it- it’s something we don’t tend to think about but shoudl be aware of-

When I read that article, they mentioned absolutely nothing about the patients...age...underlying condition...severity of the case, etc.

They they say “two or three out of 12”...well. Is it two? Or Three?

The fact that this was even put out for people to read, people who are afraid, is damned atrocious. It borders on criminal, preying on the fear many people have, who are unable to assimilate and process the actual meaning.

To make the statement “one quarter of those who survive will have a COPD-like lung condition” is enough for any educated person to call BS on.

But this is where we are.

I'd rather live with reduced lung capacity with the hope that it can be treated later than live with being dead, wait. that didn't sound right...
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

The false positive rate was 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

I didn’t see that assertion in his/her post that “the virus is nothing more than a cold”.

But, many naysayers think that the seriousness of this virus ranks about that of a cold or flu. This is not the cold or flu. It's much more serious.

I don’t see how your post made any contribution to this thread.

That's possibly because what I said was something you didn't want to hear. I want all those naysayers to be the first in line for the vaccine trials. Hey, I hear they're paying good money! Here's a chance for all those brave souls to step up and show some backbone!

I donno.

Living with being dead would take some getting used to, of course, but I could finally have pancakes and syrup without worrying about my borderline diabetes.

“garbage article, written scare tactic to incite clicks, and spread garbage.
“2 or 3 out of 12 with 20-30%” is hardly scientific, a pathetic sample, and far too early to tell.
We don’t even know the ages of supposed ‘2 or 3’.
Damn I hate articles like this.”

DITTO.

Did they have diminished lung capacity to start with? Were they in the high risk group? Smokers, past or present? Older than dirt?

Without complete DETAILS this propaganda is useless.
