Now that the number of new people infected with the coronavirus in China is slowing, the country's Communist Party is ratcheting up threats against the West, with a particularly nasty warning about access to life-saving drugs aimed at the United States.
In an article in Xinhua, the state-run media agency that's largely considered the mouthpiece of the party, Beijing bragged about its handling of COVID-19, a virus that originated in Wuhan and has spread quickly around the world, killing nearly 5,000 people and infecting thousands more. The article also claimed that China could impose pharmaceutical export controls which would plunge America into "the mighty sea of coronavirus."

What if some bright Chinese guy figured out a way to prove we did it and then used that in their propaganda?
I feel like we need to do more serious thinking, not just lighthearted what ifs.
I agree. Except that I do vote; but I just have ONE vote. And the dead and illegal immigrants usually vote against my preferred type of candidate.
What can I actually DO about it, other than send money to support those I feel are actually acting effectively in the Senate and the House?
What if it was a well intentioned law that someone thought would cut down on the bureaucracy...that turned out to have unintended consequences? I’m willing to think the best of our congressmen and fellow countrymen until unable to find any rationale.
We really shouldn’t rush to ascribe to malice what can be explained by simple self-centered thinking, thoughtlessness or folly.
President Reagan did have a few other worries to fill his time, though, right? And speaking of freedom, which President Reagan cared deeply about, wouldn’t regulating Chinese imports have gone against the grain for him, at a time when China was not the largest threat?
The only things I can think of are that our legal system has in part caused our health system and our manufacturing to be more expensive than it probably needs to be.
In China, do they have to worry about health and safety inspections? Do they worry about environmental and water regulations? Do they worry about compliance and lawsuits? I wonder if we haven’t built up a vindictive revenge system that ends up costing everyone. Let’s not even get started on political correctness, sexual harassment, “proper” pronouns and the like...
And there is a lot of waste, too, even in our health care system.
So yeah, our companies have to deal with a bit more overhead than some Chinese companies do. They can just pay bribes in the right places and are done with all that.

This is true.
But how much land does Israel control? How much land does China control?
How large is the population of Israel, especially compared to the population of China?
Which of the two is likely to be able to produce more sheer quantity? And is it in Israel’s best interest to dedicate that much of their capability to this economic purpose?
Uh...speaking of giants, in terms of population and even in land mass, China is really, really BIG.
We cannot be blind to their real capabilities...that are growing all the time. How much technology have they managed to steal from us (and others) so far? Quite a bit.
We may actually find ourselves humbled if we pick a fight at the wrong time or in the wrong place. I’m not saying we should have our tail between our legs, I’m saying we need to recognize it wouldn’t be a sinecure. Unfortunately, there’s good reason why they feel boastful and self-confident.
I think the Chinese are referring to the fact that if they cut the supply of masks, gloves, syringes, antibiotics, and so on to us - it would place our doctors in an untenable situation and the virus would likely spread exponentially. We buy a LOT of material from them and some things aren’t made in sufficient quantities anywhere else, anymore.
And what exactly are YOUR qualifications to judge whether or not President Bush was qualified?

Didn’t he make an oath to uphold the constitution? Wouldn’t going dictator sort of be at odds with that?
India sources a LOT of its raw materials from China. So if we switch to India we would still have a problem because China could deny the raw materials - in time of war, for example.
They are working very hard (especially online) to try to pin this on us (as in accusing the US army of having planted the Wuhan virus over there to start the initial infections). If they can provide hard enough spin, it just might provide their sympathizers with enough diplomatic cover to continue with impunity.
Yes, treason does merit a firing squad. But did they have that mindset - to commit treason - when it is LEGAL to ship jobs to China? Now, while I cannot imagine doing that myself, I think that as a matter of process & law, we ought not to try to apply a standard retroactively. So, as Devil’s Advocate: China used to not treat us as an enemy: how were we to know they wouldn’t become an ally like Japan?

China has been systematically putting into place, plans to destroy the United States, in order to gain access to our land and (unspoiled) natural resources.
And they way they treated their own people. I remember reading an article in the New York Slimes about a minor party official who participated in some farming contest, I think it was "best rooster" or "largest chicken" or something like that.
He lost. So he had the grandfather in the family whose chicken beat him, beheaded, and forced the family to sleep in the same bed as the decapititated corpse.
The source was the Chinese family themselves, IIRC.
Add to that the mandatory sterilization and involuntary abortions...
