Australian ex-pats in Italy say theres no point coming home because its only a matter of time until Australia has a coronavirus crisis.
Jodie Kearney lives in Rome with her husband and four children.
She is no longer working because her employer, a private school, has closed.
Now her husband has been forced to close the business.
We probably wont have an income this month but plenty of bills, she said.
Its a desperate and scary situation.
Andrea Pastorelli is an administrator of the Australians in Italy Facebook group.
In a post to his family and friends around the world, he warned other nations to take the coronavirus threat seriously.
At the beginning of this, we didnt take it seriously, he wrote.
Then we complained about the media overdoing it and creating hysteria.
Then we vowed to not be affected by it, that the economy needed to come first and we needed to keep living our normal lives.
I was doing all of the above until this past weekend.
Thats when it became clear that this thing spreads super easily, and kills more than we thought.
460 people dead in a few days, and no, its not only old people.
Theres people in their 40s and 50s too.
But most importantly, since when is a grandparent worth less to us?
Christina Higgins is an American living Bergamo, Italy, the heart of the coronavirus crisis.
She says the world needs to act fast to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

I’m guessing in the long run the overreaction to the coronavirus will cause far more deaths than the disease itself. It also tells me that the world is woefully unprepared for a real threat like the bubonic plague of the 14th century that would sweep through a country and kill 1/3 of the total population in a matter of weeks. If the coronavirus, which amounts to a slightly more severe case of the flu can destroy the economy and shut down entire countries, imagine what something like the plague would do.
Aren’t the Italian borders wide open to immigrants in the 10’s of thousands?
I think people are taking it seriously now. I started working from home several weeks ago.
I think we got it nipped in the bud, just in time, not saying the next few months won’t get a bit rocky, but I think we’ll get through this, as we did with H1N1.
I don’t think there was much Trump could have done. We aren’t Korea, which is a homogenous society. Trying to get Americans to go along with anything is like herding cats.
And the way things are now in this country, anything Trump does would be called ‘racist’ or ‘xenophoblic’. Korea doesn’t have that problem.
That’s why multicultural societies are ultimately doomed to fail.

How many weeks?”
The million dollar question. Some say it’s on the low end of 10 days, others say a few weeks.
The point is we don’t even have enough testing kits to quantify let alone clamp down on the spread.
That’s why the US situation is so problematic. Aggressive steps required now.
The mental machinations it must take to dismiss all of reality is astounding. Chanting “but, but, but the flu” only makes it stop in your mind.
Sounds like the leaked reports from Wuhan.
How could the West not have prepared for this?
How can open borders globalism be so important that we allow a pandemic?
“Sounds like the leaked reports from Wuhan.”

Hopefully the people won’t be disappeared and/or end up being found dead as the Chinese doctor who spoke out was.
“How could the West not have prepared for this?”

Lots of reasons, but none of them good.
“How can open borders globalism be so important that we allow a pandemic?”

Even without a horrific disease circling the planet, the powers that be knew the dangers of a borderless society.
As big as Russia is, they only have 28 sick people with the virus, no deaths.
And India has 74 sick/virus people in the entire country...no deaths!
People with aids die of various different causes, because their deficient immune system is inadequate to overcome what is attacking their body. Aids indirectly kills them by weakening their immune system. People do not die of aids, they die of something else.
Correct.
If I go into quarantine it will be because *I* decide to go into it, period. Anyone with an opinion otherwise had best be wearing something that will stop a .300 Winchester 220 grain custom load.
\Not that I won’t quarantine, obviously; *IF >I< decide it makes sense to*
Thanks for posting. Pearls before swine indeed. If we are fortunate to actually get some curve flattening it won’t be due to complacency.
Nearly all of China's neighboring nations have at least partially sealed their borders or restricted travel to and from the People's Republic amid a novel coronavirus outbreak that has spread beyond even the figures reported for the country's last deadly disease epidemic.
I think he was agreeing with you.
Maybe it has something to do with their diet (half kidding). I do like Indian food.
“There are lots of people who die every day. They range from newborn to 100+. “

As I’ve said, it’s astounding the mental gymnastics and excuses people will go through to try to not think about the elephant in the living room. Oh well...
Still at it huh?

How long ago was that article?
When you are in the middle of a hotspot you better believe it looks bad... and there is little doubt northern Italy is currently a hot spot...
I would not want to be there myself right now, I am healthy 40something, but I know if I got a bad case of this, there, I may not get appropriate treatment because the system is currently overwhelmed.. So even though with proper care I would likely survive, there is no guarantee I would be able to get appropriate care.
This can happen anywhere, not just in Italy but N Italy is definitely dealing with it right now.
Italy quarantines entire country as coronavirus cases and deaths surge
