‘Buy American’ — White House Confirms Executive Order That Will End Medical Supply Chain Reliance On China
dailycaller ^ | 3-11-2020 | Christian Datoc

White House Director of Trade and Manufacturing Policy Peter Navarro confirmed Wednesday the administration is working on an executive order to eliminate the government’s reliance on foreign-made medical supplies.

The “Buy American” order comes on the heels of concerns expressed by senators during their Tuesday meeting with President Donald Trump on Capitol Hill.

[snip]

The order would prevent federal agencies from purchasing medical supplies, including face masks, gloves and ventilators, from China.

China has prevented the export of surgical face masks, severely limiting supplies in the U.S. and countries around the world.

“China has managed to dominate all aspects of the supply chain using the same unfair trade practices that it has used to dominate other sectors — cheap sweatshop labor, lax environmental regulations and massive government subsidies,” Navarro told New York Times. “As President Trump has said, what we need to do is bring those jobs home so that we can protect the public health and the economic and national security of the country.”

He added that the EO would cover more than 400 “essential medicines” that “satisfy the priority health care needs of the population.” Additional products targeted in the order include “medical countermeasures” made to protect against chemical and biological threats, radiation, nuclear fallout and infectious diseases like coronavirus.

“Nothing we do now will impede in any way our ability to get what we need when we need it from foreign sources,” he told CBS.

The European Travel Ban makes a lot of sense, and I will tell you why.

If I am in Italy, and I get a nice COVID-19 exposure, or if I start to feel a little run down, what am I going to do?

If I stay in Italy, I know that if I get sick the medical system is completely broken down. They are making the hard decisions about who gets a ventilator, and who will be left out in the hallway to die, and more and more are being left out in the hallway.

Nothing against the Italians. They are in a tough spot, and making the tough calls.

I could go to Germany or France, but they are going to be in the same spot, soon enough. And then if it comes to an Italian on the ventilator or a Good German on the ventilator, I have a pretty good idea how that would go.

So I am going to head to the airport and get on the first plane to JFK. I am going to get myself to America, where there are more ventilators per 100,000 people than anywhere else on the planet, where I can walk into an Emergency Room, and they will move Heaven and Earth to save my sorry Italian self. I will go to America, where the disease is still just getting started, and beat the rush.

It is the rational thing to do, and people will do it by the thousands.

And in doing so, they will sicken hundreds of thousands. In a month, we will be out in the hallways of American hospitals, deciding who gets the ventilator, and who is left out in the hallway to die.

We are not going to do that. Stop the flights. Ban European Travel.

If we were serious there would be a 20% import tariff on ALL GOODS!!! Then watch as the flood of domestic production comes on line then. We are talking 10% GDP.

A tariff would solve all of our economic problems.

A tariff would solve all of our economic and financial problems in the the long term. The problem is that Americans are greedy short term thinkers. The older one gets the more short term and greedy most seem to get. Look at the most of the posters on Free Republic, it is obvious.

Saving $20 dollars an hour by hiring six Chinese in China rather than one American in the US

That does not translate into a per unit retail price savings of $20. The per unit savings is pennies on the dollar. Not worth it IMO.

It’s still a poor country by our standards — and likely to get poorer as we bring manufacturing home.

Stop giving a sh!t about the Chinese and start caring about the USA.

There is no justifying offshoring of our industrial base. None. Stop trying.

Republicans think mostly with their stomachs and seem to only care about domestic agriculture and farming for some stupid reason that I can’t figure out.

Exactly why we need a tariff. Once the Feds get addicted to the new huge revenue stream the tariffs will be permanent. A GOOD THING!!!

Mine flushes first time, every time, doesn't plug up, and has caused me no trouble. How would taking the water limit make that better?

Globalist whores should shut up.

But isn't the purpose of tariffs to discourage imports? So by definition shouldn't that revenue stream dry up to nothing as imports slow to a trickle?

So you’re comfortable with the government telling business where and how they should make pharmaceuticals, electronics, and the like but not toilets?

All we need is a 20% tariff on imports and then get out of the way

How about we take a page from the political left and use this event to achieve national security goals; lock down our borders and fix trade inequities. Both of these measures are necessary *and* it will cause the free traders among us to lose their minds.

Well, do you want America to join you under your isolationist rock?

That is inferred from your rants
