Coronavirus 10 times more lethal than seasonal flu, top health official says

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the outbreak will get worse and warned the U.S. must take serious mitigation efforts.

The federal government’s top infectious disease expert told lawmakers Wednesday that the novel coronavirus spreading across the globe is 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu.

“I mean people always say, 'Well, the flu does this, the flu does that,'” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said Wednesday during a hearing before the House Oversight and Reform Committee.

“The flu has a mortality rate of 0.1 percent. This has a mortality rate of 10 times that. That’s the reason I want to emphasize we have to stay ahead of the game in preventing this,” he added.

Fauci warned that the outbreak in the U.S. is going to get worse before it gets better and said the U.S. must act quickly to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

He said how much worse it gets depends on the country’s ability to contain the influx of infected people coming to the U.S. from other countries, as well as the ability to contain and mitigate the virus domestically.

“Bottom line: It’s going to get worse,” Fauci said. “If we don’t do very serious mitigation now, what’s going to happen is we’re going to be weeks behind,” in containing the spread of the virus.

If you don’t know how many people are infected then how can you make this statement?

Seriously, if people can be a symptomatic, how do you determine the total patient population?

10 people out of 1000 or is 10 people out of 100,000 or 1,000,000?

Dr. Fauci doesn’t know. He doesn’t. This is madness when a so called smart Doctor doesn’t understand basic statistics.

.1 x 10 = 1%

It is clear that the data shows 0.3 max in developed countries.

It could only be this high averaging all countries.

“If we don’t do very serious mitigation now..."

OK, so what exactly IS "serious mitigation" in the United States? Shutting down ALL international air travel to/from the US? Shutting down ALL air travel including domestic? Cancelling every single large gathering? Requiring EVERYBODY to self-quarantine in their domicile and having food and supplies delivered to your front porch?

I have no idea, but if this is as bad as some in the medical community suggest then Trump is in for his greatest battle ever. I believe he is doing a good job of handling it.

But since it is not perfect, any small mistakes will be exploited by the left (media). Fear is contagious and many times irrational. They will use that for power.

If anyone is up for the battle its Trump. However things could change in our country and lives rapidly. May he prevail.

If everybody is quarantined at home who’s going to be left to deliver food and supplies?

This whole thing is just silly.

Asymptomatic is what I meant but not what auto-correct meant.

Pretty much. Some doctors are saying we need to cancel schools and lock cities down like they did in China. The WHO keeps praising the Chinese government and the measures they took.

10 people out of 1000 or is 10

I know math is hard. 8>)

10 out of 100 is 10%. Your example is 1%

This guy is a mistake and I think he has an agenda, like most other people in the CDC. Nobody in any other country has said this is more lethal than the yearly flu, simply because the data aren’t there to say it. Judging by the countries where it is burning itself out (which any virus does), the death rate is lower, but even in that case they don’t know how many people had it before they started testing for it.

Why does he appear with panic stricken shrieks all the time? Even other countries where the effect was more severe haven’t done this.

Italy has had the worst impact in Europe, but that’s because Italy has the oldest population in Europe. Older people or immune-system compromised people should be careful and stay indoors for a couple of weeks (and avoid the biggest vector of infection, hospitals) but for most other people it could be like any flu or even just a cold. Some people didn’t know they’d had it until they were tested.

Singapore and Hong Kong are also good models of containment. At least so far. They have managed to contain to linear growth unlike most other nations where it has gone exponential.

But I understand your point, what is the true infected count? Is it the reported number or are there numerous unreported cases? I agree with your point.

What about the 20 thousand who have already died from the common flu. Or, how about the 40 to 50 thousand who die on our highways each and every year, etc.
