Upside for Trump is that he appears proactive and on-top of the situation, blunting media claims that he’s bungling this.

Downside is that the markets are going to see that headline and think the worst.

Diabetics have the least likelihood of getting or succumbing to this virus. In fact, there have been reports of this virus reversing diabetes.

“My understanding was they are screened before boarding.”

Fox interviewed a girl the other day. She was only asked at departure in Italy if she had been to China or travelling with someone who had been to China. No temperature test.

Why do our conservative Freepers pull out the Alinsky trick bag when criticizing fellow Freepers on this topic? Don’t get it.

“Maybe he’s gonna put the hammer down on all these petty political fiefdoms, and cast blame squarely on them for deliberately sabotaging the country.”

I sure hope so!! I live just outside Seattle and our idiot Governor (who ran for President and couldn’t even garner 1% support) is announcing a “ban” on groups of more than 250 people in our three largest counties, effectively destroying the economy of the entire state! Yes, there have been 25 deaths BUT at least 19 of them are associated with ONE nursing home, which didn’t have a great reputation before this outbreak and is known to take only the sickest of patients. Go after them and figure out what went wrong - absolutely! Destroy the lives of literally thousands of people to make “Orange Man” look bad? NO!!

The very first US case of corona virus was in Seattle. That patient has fully recovered.

But we won’t hear a peep about how most patients recover. We will hear neverending reports about deaths increasing but we won’t hear the average age of such deaths is 80+ nor will we hear that such deaths occurred in people with poor health to begin with.

This is a political war being waged. The President is holding an emergency meeting to coordinate and unify truthful messaging among medical officials that are recognized as authorities.

No matter how many times you say it doesn’t make your adverts ruins any less true. And it kills through a vid IOU’s pneumonia and cytokines response. Is a beautiful scare monger. You just described sepsis and shock of which sepsis is the leading killer world wide. We have had the surviving sepsis campaign since 2002. Millions of people die of septic shock (a vicious cytokines response) each year.

It is not the flu. It is a cold. It probably has been here for longer than expected. Assuming the conservative estimate of 10,000 cases from epidemiologists at the CDC the mortality rate is 0.01-0.1%

But why let the true facts get in the way if a good panic.

Thus far the CDC, the WHO and European health officials are studiously avoiding any mention of race in the data they are releasing. Thus far only a crude number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 (specific nature of the definitive diagnostic test not revealed) and a number of people who have died and were diagnosed as having CODID-19 infection are being released. Critical data is being withheld for whatever reason. If you go to the Johns Hopkins COVIS-19 site, the omissions are painfully obvious.

I have never read such unadulterated BS. Especially reversing diabetes. The guy who died yesterday in NJ was a diabetic age 69.

Oh please.... and in 1918 when 1,000 people died in a single day in Philadelphia that wasn’t flu either because it was something never seen before. A flu virus that only reacts a certain way when your life alarm clock hits a certain age... is well... is a contorted explanation.

Fauci is not the only virus-vaccine expert in the world.

Of course not..but the net is that vaccines typically take years to get through all the different testing stages..(so, as Fauci has said, 12-18 months would be the "fastest rollout of a vaccine in human history"). There's time needed to see how people react to "beta" versions of a vaccine before it rolls into production. That's not something that can be compressed, unless you want to risk harming - or killing - a lot of people with vaccines that you did not have adequate time to assess.

Yup.

It will have to be done if we are to fight this or any other disease.

Imagine if there were a war. Even IF the war wasn’t with China or India we would still be faced with the extra issues involved in importing necessary medicines from half a world away.

And it gives the other countries unecessary say in our political moves. ‘we don’t like this trade agreement, we’ll just half your shipments of antibiotics’.

Since we are the third most populated country in the world why WOULDN’T we have more cases? Not only that but we are the most traveled to Nation on the planet so that means more opportunity for this to spread.

Well, does he have diabetes any more?

NO!

His diabetes is reversed.

Unless like me you are in the elder category. Except I get a flu shot every autumn and it either protects me or greatly lessens the severity. There is no vaccine for covid19. Nor is there likely to be one available to the masses for months, if not a year. So pardon me for not feeling confident about how this is turning out. Yes if it hits you, you might have a case of the sniffles, but when you sit next to me on the bus, in the restaurant, in the pew in church you may have inadvertantly killed me.

Death rate in the elderly is up to 14.8% for those over 80. I forget the rate for those 70 and up, but it’s > 8%. 60 and up is 3.6 - 3.8%.

Death rate for the common flu is 0.83% for those over age 65.

Heck of a difference.

That said, death rate is not the issue here. The issue is occurrence of “very serious” cases that require hospitalization (~15%) and ICU (~5%). That and the fact this thing spreads asymptomatically, spreads via aerosol transmission, spreads like wildfire (very high R0 factor) and can live on surfaces for days (up to 9). Those are also very big differences from “the common flu”.

A few random thoughts from an RN who has worked in ICU settings:

Announcing EVERY new case on social media, traditional media is just driving panic and increasing anxiety. There has to be a more responsible and reasonable way to announce statistics than any particular media outlet blaring it five times over an hour on a Facebook post.

Expect hospital surges in hot spots across the country. It happened during H1N1 and will happen again.

Canceling mass events and so on is not a bad idea. Limiting the spread helps flatten the peak of this wave.

Seems like best case scenario for a vaccine is winter or spring next year. Hopefully Remsedivir will prove to be an effective anti viral and get be mass produced over the next few months. Just a treatment alone will calm some of the panic.

You’re too rational.
Better get off FR for a while and go out for some paranoia.
