Middle class Americans are opting not to marry because until they're financially ready, according to new research that shows people value having a lot of money and a career they enjoy more than a legal union.
Student loans and other debts get in the way of marriage which is nowadays regarded as a 'capstone achievement' that comes once an individual has set up for a stable future, researchers say.
While 60 percent of Americans said they had been married in 2002 that dropped to 50 percent in 2017.
In that same 15-year period the cohabiting figures rose from 54 percent to 59 percent, according to Pew Research.

If a tree in the forest falls on your ex and nobody is present to hear it, ....................... You should still get rid of the chainsaw.
“Money never stopped people who wanted to marry. Never.”
True. On the other end, neither a lot of money nor a lack of money has stopped people from getting divorced as well. There must be other factors.
If colleges are filled with the left indoctrinated, progressive women, I’d be turned off no matter how physically attractive they might otherwise be. A past friend, conservative, widower, is living with his leftist love. He complained about her politics but doesn’t confront her so as to avoid leftist wrath. The loneliness was greater burden for him than complete surrender to her politics, which she supposedly spouts about frequently.
The thing these days that gets most cohabitating couples to take the plunge and actually tie the knot is childbearing. Once they decide to reproduce at least some of them come to the conclusion that this is a good idea.
Most couples nowadays put off having children until they feel financially secure.
With student debt they can be in their late 30’s and not be. Hence the marriage never occurs.
Student Debt Relief will be pushed as an antidote to cratering demographics. It will also be lobbied for....HARD!.....by the wedding industry. As well as carmakers, realtors, etc. etc. etc.
It goes on my list of bad ideas which are inevitable.
um... you cant afford to NOT get married!
these people are nuts if they are not getting married because they think they cant afford it. Marriage is one of the paths to financial well being.
Shacking up is a path to poverty.
Had a marriage that lasted 59 years until the wife died. We got married on a very short shoestring. I was in the military at the time & had almost no spendable income. Admittedly, it would be more scary doing it the same way nowadays.
SOY
Which is why the MGTOW movement is growing.
“Financially ready” depends on how it is measured. If you want a McMansion the size of your parents’ home, it’s going to take a long time. If you want a responsible view of money and responsible spending, that’s a choice people could make when they graduate from school. I didn’t wait on marriage until I was financially ready, just until I found the right woman.
I think the marriage idea is not necessarily a luxury good but one of self-protection for men.
I can think of numerous disastrous divorces. We all can. Ive seen judges slam men for having a high priced attorney while crying poverty. I didnt realize having quality legal representation didnt mean you would receive equal justice under the law. Ive seen cheating women get half and sole custody.
Screw the idea of a $30,000 wedding and reception. I rejected it in my prime marrying years out of disgust for the practice of self-indulgence. I watched my future/current sister in-law make $3,000 decisions during planning that made me question her sanity.
Plus, if women want careers, sex for pleasure, financial independence and no long term commitment or obligations.... Im more than willing to give them that.
No woman is worth half of your stuff and Ive met one woman that I wouldnt have been divorced from within 5 years based on the above.
People who have big weddings and spend money left and right sometimes wanted me to do photos. However, they wanted me to do them for nothing or next to it. That was a lot of why I quit doing side photography for others. I stayed with stock video and photos.
The money is there sometimes and other sales do nothing. It beat being chiseled.
I cut a couple of breaks for very good friends who helped me out a time or two and cut me in on some good deals.
I doubt debt is the reason. We have emasculated young men so they no longer have that drive to find a mate. Women have finally turned young men into milk sops and now they don’t want to marry them. Thank you feminists.
Sounds like he made a mistake
American men should NOT ever get married. The courts are against you.
Use men’s choice. Use a condom AND spermicide jelly. And then take the used condom with you.(so she doesn’t impregnate herself.)
It was always this way. We live in the first world with third world wages.
Everything is wildly expanses, insurance food, everything. Wages are flat and have been so because of LEGAL immigration and de industrialization.
How can you NOT get married?
How much money do you save owning a home?
Rent ALWAYS goes up. Your mortgage payment doesn’t.
I think you’ve got it right.
It might also have much to do with unrealistic expectations of what young married life should be. That includes dealing with a budget based on actual income.
Amen.
Reminds me of the old advice for the mother of the groom, “Wear beige and keep your mouth shut.”
This article is ‘fake news’...the cost of a marriage license is minimal. I’m not saying some don’t get married because of the cost of living, but the larger reasons are men getting raped in divorce courts, and just about everywhere else in American society. Many have just about had it.
