Cox knows first-hand how miserable the flu can be. Now he works on a Georgia State University research team testing a next-generation drug against the flu called EIDD 2801. The drug works by targeting an enzyme needed to replicate the flu virus in the body.
Cox told Ivanhoe, It looks so much like a regular nucleotide to the virus that it cant find a way to distinguish between it and other ones.
Allowing the drug to sneak pass the virus and stop it from replicating.
So, it stops the application process so the virus cannot produce new genomes that then can be packaged into new viral particles, Richard Plemper, PhD, professor at Georgia State University.
Some antiviral drugs currently available on the market, such as Tamiflu, have been found to be ineffective against some strains of the influenza virus. But with tests on ferrets, this new drug proves to be effective against all strains.
Even after extensive adaptation to our compound, we could not identify any resistance mutations, Plemper said.
And this drug may even be fast-tracked to combat the coronavirus, which has surpassed 1500 deaths so far.
Colleagues of ours testing the same drug against coronavirus have actually shown this good activity, Plemper explained.
Plemper says human trials for this drug could start as early as Summer 2020. Just before the next flu season.

Meh - gramps says vodka and cran juice.
Hangovers and flus don’t mix as well as vodka and cranberry juice (although that sounds disgusting).
MNBT=MEDICINES NEXT BIG THING
Thank you for clarifying that. I guess people might think that is the name of the drug.
Gramps can argue the point. Cran is good for the prostate and he says he’ll never have that problem and the vodka unites with the white cells to stave off infections. Good on both accounts; me, I prefer orange juice - get the vitamin C with that.
I did!
Hopeful news!Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Lancet has a new study on COVID-19 out today. Studied the deaths in China:

This was concerning:
The Lancet
@TheLancet
Study also suggests #COVID19 hospitalised patients shed the virus for longer than expectedmedian duration of viral shedding was 20 days in survivors & virus was detectable until death in the 54 non-survivors, but true duration of viral shedding for all patients remains unclear
Pssst, don’t tell anybody, but I did, too. Guess I didn’t think about it at first. :-)
Oh gosh!
CPAC attendee denied coronavirus test and told their symptoms are irrelevant: report
Why isn't there something in common with a broad range of virus strains that can be targeted by one drug or vaccine?

Was this the same attendee that came into contact or close to some important folks?
Check the person’s Dr. or whoever denied them their test.
Sounds promising. BUT, Even after extensive adaptation to our compound, we could not identify any resistance mutations, Plemper said.
How long before those sneaky RNA viruses figure out what’s going on and mutate to get around it?
There were no tests until recently apparently. Nobody was getting tested at all.
CDC sent out 50 tests to each state. Then told the states the tests didn’t work. Washington State developed its own test and until yesterday even folks at the nursing home hadn’t been tested.
We have NO IDEA what the real numbers are in the U.S.
This person apparently was at CPAC and was exposed and had symptoms. Asked for a test and denied.
The person positive in Kentucky went to the hospital. They asked twice for testing and were denied.
The infected person was FIVE HOURS in a room talking to people. Not good.
Cran is good for the prostate, aye? Mine is starting to swell a little according to my last general physical:( And I like it by itself. I’m getting all the vitamin C I need and more these days, since it boosts the immune system.
The person that interacted with the important folks at CPAC may be in hospital:

So maybe the one denied tests was a different person?
Or not??
My take was there was a guy there who later tested positive. That guy was there five hours. Talked to Cruz and others.
The others included someone who felt ill and asked for testing. Was refused testing.
More concerning was the physicians assistant who caught it at a Times Square medical conference. Thats potentially thousands of people exposed including those in the medical field seeing patients every day. Virus can incubate up to 24 days with no symptoms.
Theres no way we can contain this. Just prep
