Family of Missouri's first coronavirus patient broke self quarantine, St. Louis County officials say

Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School will close Monday after administrators learned that a St. Louis County woman infected with the coronavirus is the older sister of a Villa Duchesne student.

Moreover, a message from the schools to parents, circulating on social media, warns that the father and sister of the infected patient attended a school father-daughter dance Saturday night at the Ritz-Carlton in Clayton. They also apparently attended a pre-dance gathering at the house of a Villa student.

St. Louis County Executive Sam Page said Sunday that the patient’s family had been told on Thursday to self quarantine at their home in Ladue. Page said the patient’s father had not followed health department instructions. Page spoke at a news conference Sunday evening.

County health officials told the man on Sunday, Page said, “that he must remain in his home or they will issue a formal quarantine that will require him and the rest of his family to stay in their home by the force of law.”

Self-quarantine might have worked in America of the 1940s and 1950s.

That America is dead, and not coming back. Trying to lead a fractious and disobedient people in the manner currently being used is a recipe for disaster.

Civil law will.

The father who disregarded quarantine will likely be sued into the poor house.

In North Korea he would have been shot. Appropriate here.

Oh please. Hyperbole much?

This is just a flu virus. It's not even as bad as the regular flu.

This is definitely worse than the common flu.

All numbers show this to be true.

We have vaccines for flu. We don’t have one for this yet. If you’re a senior, have an underlying health condition, you’re at a much greater risk. Folks should think of those people if told to stay at home.

“I think the guilty party (the father) should have to pay to have the school cleaned and any other ‘inconvenience’ suffered by those in quarantine now. Hit them in the wallet”.

Would his homeowners insurance pay for it?

All numbers show this to be true.

No, they don't.

I do not deny it is contagious. However, the US alone has had more deaths from the common flu than there are worldwide *cases* of this corona virus.

And yes--I also recognize the need to protect those who are already compromised by other issues, as those are the people that this seems to be killing.

I'm not dismissing this as nothing, but it is nowhere near as severe as you, and the media, wish it was.

That is really quite remarkable considering the exposure.

I get what you’re saying, except it’s “HIPAA” - Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. It was an Al Gore disaster that never really made health insurance portable. We just got stuck with an overkill on the privacy part of the act.

This is a lawyers dream. Rich Dad at daughter dance after being told to self-quarantine pending confirmation?

So he is now liable for lost wages and if someone dies, or is permanently incapacitated (30 year olds with COPD/half a lung), this family will lose everything in a lawsuit.

Methinks some elderly teachers at that school may be dead in 10 days.

This man should be publicly named and shamed at the LEAST.

The “portability” was never really implemented while the “privacy” was/is overemphasized verging on paranoia.

Absolutely hide from it, particularly women, there is a saying: being pale covers three blemishes. Basically, if you have pale skin it makes up for three physical flaws.

Whitening creams are insanely popular.

The American Hospital Association stated this will be 10X the problem of a serious flu season.

It did expect the death rate to be about 0.5%, though.

You use gross numbers instead of known ratios and numbers. So, we’ll just have to see how far the infections go so we can compare more properly.

Unfortunate.

Vitamin D3 seems to protect from some respiratory illnesses at least:
