"If the situation of generalized panic continues, thousands of businesses, especially small ones, will first enter a liquidity crisis, then close their doors.

In the three most affected regions Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna (in descending order) cancellation rates on bookings of hotels, flights and apartments have reached as high as 90%. These three regions also happen to be the main motor of Italys economy, accounting for 40% of Italys GDP. The countrys financial capital (and capital of Lombardy), Milan, is like a ghost town, with many of its most important landmarks, including the Teatro alla Scala opera house, closed to visitors.

Almost like Obama Care was hitting them.
Serves them right. Always looking down their noses at Americans.
Let them enjoy their Muslims. Screw ‘em!
There are parts of Planet Earth that incredibly beautiful and are worthy of the tourist industry. Nations with such tourist destinations should diversify their nations economic structures to include other non-tourist industries. Wine bread and wonderful side walk cafe scenes are OK. It is just that each nation needs factories and mines and morlocks to do the heavy lifting. On their day off, the Morlocks can visit the Eloi for croissants and coffee.
Tourism will recover eventually. Not so sure about the cruise ship industry.
Even before Covid-19, cruise ships were always a bit of a floating health hazard with regular outbreaks of gastro, flu, and even measles. Cruise ships seem to be a lot unhealthier than an Navy ship I ever served on or heard of.
Yeah, but people there are also cancelling trips and spending money at home.
Only places extremely dependent on tourists won’t come out ahead.
I get claustrophobia just looking at a cruise ship- or is it sardineophobia?
I had a trip to Italy and France planned (but thankfully not yet booked) for all of April. No thanks. Also had a cruise to Asia booked in February - had to eat that one...no way was I going into that hot bed - and that’s part of the reason that I have NO SYMPATHY for anyone who got on a cruise ship after Feb 5. They deserve what they’re getting and hopefully they’ll start to learn what’s important in life.

My wife and I go to Spain every two or three years. She is Mexican and totally fluent and this gringo speaks pretty good Spanish.
We were planning a trip to Spain this spring. That trip is now off due to corona virus. When this is all over we will return. When we travel in Spain we stay and visit where the middle class Spaniards stay. It makes for a grand vacation. When one stays in these places and can speak Spanish the hospitality of the locals is most great.
Funny story about our first visit. My lady went down to the hotel desk and asked to use the “computador.” She was asking to use the hotel computer to surf the net. In Mexico and all of South America this is what you ask. However in Spain she was asking “can I use your computing whore.” The lady at the desk was somewhat taken aback. When she came back to our room she said, “Do not ask to use the computador.” She then gave me the proper terminology for Spain. It was most amusing. When I asked to use the guest computer I did use the proper terminology as instructed by my wife.
Don't forget the lovely Legionnaires' disease.
Still, it seemed like the odds of disaster were low enough to be ignored. Not anymore. A cruise ship is now a potential prison where you might be confined against your will for weeks or months surrounded by highly infectious inmates.
People will go a long way to avoid that experience.
They’ll just have to replace the tourists with more rapugees.
Brazil recently reported the first confirmed case in South or Central America. The land south of Mexico in this hemisphere has so far been virtually unaffected. Since there is a gestation time for this disease, that’s no comfort. I’ve noticed fewer people in restaurants and stores.
The average cruise ship is a lot bigger than any warship I ever set foot on (stand fast USN CVs).

just today, several of us were just talking about the fact that the cruise industry could be finished off permanently by COVAD-19 ... norovirus occasionally sweeping though these big ships with thousands of people is bad enough, but COVAD-19 infecting folks on these ships and killing some of them is a whole different story ...
That’s tourism itself , but when you consider that those people in the tourism industry are no longer getting a paycheck and can’t pay rent, mortgage, car loans and stop buying everything except absolute necessities, the impact is much bigger.
I’m on vacation in Gran Canaria right now, staying at an all-inclusive resort. People aren’t walking around in face masks. The local markets have plenty of toilet paper on the shelves. People are on the beaches. The only pictures of panic, long lines and empty shelves are at Costco in America. The big difference is that the Spanish media isn’t pushing a panic narrative like the American media and the Daily Mail.
In Egypt its probably even worse.
Exactly. I live in Eastern Europe and travel most of Europe weekly. Except for tiny pockets, daily life is perfectly normal in 98% of Europe. But if you watch the news you wouldn’t know that...
