Can the Coronavirus-Panic-Creating Media be Sued for Closed Businesses and Lost Jobs?
Townhall.com ^ | March 7, 2020 | Douglas McKinnon

The deliberate panic created over the coronavirus is not victimless. Far from it.

When the radioactive dust settles from this orchestrated panic-strategy, potentially hundreds of billions will have been lost, thousands of businesses closed, and millions of employees fired.

When the coronavirus first reared its ugly head, many in the media instantly saw it as a cheap and easy way to increase clicks, newspaper sales, viewers, listeners, and most especially Ad revenue.

In the guise of “informing the public,” they intended to run scare headlines and stories to spike attention to their sites. And run them, they did.

One of the oldest axioms in the news business being: “If it bleeds, it leads.” The coronavirus was tailor-made for that requirement.

Except, now even the media executives pushing the scare tactics for hoped-for increased Ad revenue have realized they went way too far and opened a Pandora’s Box they are unable to close.

The economic devastation ignited by the deliberate panic strategy is spreading like an unchecked wildfire.

In addition to the massive financial loss to our nation and the world is the haunting psychological trauma inflicted on untold millions now terrorized by the prospect of getting the virus.

Naturally, once it was clear that the panic was not only taking hold but spreading, craven politicians predictably jumped into the echo chamber to scream “The Sky is Falling” for partisan or self-serving reasons.

Well, how do you like what you’ve all done now?

The CDC reports that during the six-month run of SARS in 2003, (which was also a coronavirus) it cost the world an estimated $40 billion.

But, that $40 billion should not be viewed as some cold statistic. Rather it should and must be seen as the devastation inflicted upon real business, real jobs, and real lives. Don’t see numbers. Instead, visualize the faces of the thousands to hundreds of thousands of human beings who lost their jobs as their companies were either forced to cut back or go out of business altogether.

The panic created over this current Coronavirus already far exceeds that of the SARS pandemic of 2003. Seemingly exponentially so.

That being the case, it’s safe to assume that when it’s all said and done and this strain of the Coronavirus has run its course – as it will with a far smaller infection and fatality rate than the yearly flu -- the financial punishment to businesses and the living and breathing human beings they employ will not only be far greater than the $40 billion in 2003, but truly catastrophic.

In 1987, when Raymond Donovan, former Secretary of Labor under President Ronald Reagan, was rightfully acquitted of a smear-campaign and criminal charge, he famously asked: “Which office do I go to get my reputation back?”

Now, with potentially thousands of businesses about to close and collectively millions of people about to be (or already) fired from their jobs, where do those business owners and their employees go to get their livelihoods back?

Can they -- and should they -- be allowed to enter into a class-action lawsuit against those who willingly created a panic for ratings, Ad revenue, and political advantage.

I submit it’s a very legitimate question.

I don’t know if it’s over-hyped.

Maybe. Maybe not.

We shall see.

This is a major part of the media’s war on Trump.

Just check FR.

Those types got the ball rolling.

Then they picked-up some allies in the MSM.

Now they both work together, and are BFFs. One feeds scare articles to give fuel for the loons to bark louder to scare people, so the MSM can generate more articles.

I suspect that China started this outbreak intentionally- that they released a lab-cultivated virus into its own populace. I also believe that the media, which does nothing more than to play the prostitute to the globalists' pimp, is equally to blame for stirring the panic.

What better way to swoop in and gain control of global economy than to create a pandemic? All you have to do is wind it up, let it go, and tell the media whores to start shrieking.

It’s more like businesses either furloughing employees or having them work from home.

I was speaking with a friend who is in a relatively high level public health position supporting the military, they are monitoring and making contingency plans but he didn’t seem all that panicked by it.

He seemed to agree that the media hype was creating a needless panic.

I am disgusted by the hysteria here. I really thought FReepers were better and more sensible than that. And yes, it plays right into the media’s hands, and then they echo it back with even more hysteria to whip things up.

It’s massively irresponsible and their game is going to result in a serious disruption of our economy, not from the disease, but from the hysterical closings, cancellations, and social disturbance.

Overhyped?

Most new US cases are from folks who just returned from Italy.

Check out their numbers. 775 new cases in ONE DAY, it's doubling more than weekly, and hospitals are totally overrun. Retired doctors and nurses are being "drafted" back into active service, and half-trained doctors and nurses in school are being "graduated" and pushed into service. We are just a couple weeks behind Italy.

On the "Countries that have gone BOOM" graph above, we are at the "masks don't work" stage.

I don't know what media this guy is watching but the, albeit, small amount of MSM I have seen is downplaying this. The meme is it's less lethal than the flu and only old people or people with underlying health conditions are gonna die.

The hype was so bad in China that they quarantined cities bigger than Chicago cutting their economy in half!

Major hype. Just look at the size of Wuhan in this video:

Please examine #5 and #14. It’s extremely unfortunate that the political dynamic has overtaken, in many freepers’ minds, the looming medical emergency.

Yes, the Rats are using CV as a weapon against Trump. But it is exactly the WRONG tack to say, “Therefore, CV is an over-hyped nothing burger.”

This is a HUGE MISTAKE, and it could easily be Trump’s “super Katrina,” when Bloomberg spends a billion dollars on ads playing back Trump statements about “it’s no worse than the flue,” or “it will just disappear like a miracle.”

I would strongly encourage you to please watch this video.

“How To Avoid Getting Infected By The Coronavirus”

Both screen caps (5 and 14) are from it.

Does anybody think China did this as a JOKE?

If this is what it takes to get CV under control, I doubt we can do it.

Italy is not doing it, and their case rate is doubling in less than each week. They are so desperate they are drafting retired doctors and nurses, and pushing medical and nursing school students into service.

Ask the cabbies who are waiting six hours between jobs at our airports how this Democrat /media plot has affected their families’ incomes. It is shameful.
