President Trump visited the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters Friday and expressed confidence in the public health response to the new coronavirus while airing a disagreement he has with the vice president on whether to bring the Grand Princess cruise ship passengers onshore in California.
"I have great experts, including the vice president ... they would like to have the people come off," Trump said in arguing he'd prefer to have the passengers stay idling off the coast of California. "I would rather have the people stay. But I'd go with them. I told them to make the final decision."
"I don't need the numbers to double because of one ship," Trump said, noting the U.S. numbers currently of 11 deaths and 240 infected.
"Frankly, if it were up to me, I would be inclined to say leave everybody on the ship for a period of time and use the ship as your base," Trump said
The Grand Princess lay at anchor near San Francisco after a traveler from a previous voyage died of the disease and others were being tested for the virus. While the more than 3,500 aboard the 951-foot vessel were ordered to stay at sea, officials scrambled to keep the virus at bay. Pence revealed Friday that 21 people had tested positive.
Meanwhile, Trump expressed confidence in the agency's public health response and his own ability to fend off illness.
After a day of meetings in Washington, Tennessee, and Georgia where he shook plenty of hands, Trump said he has no plans to give up glad-handing or canceling his crowded campaign rallies.
"I feel very secure," Trump said.
As for the rallies, Trump said he's had no trouble filling arenas despite the public health concerns.

They must bring them ashore and quarantine everyone in their own separate tent, or motel room or some other mandatory isolation, for at least 14 days. I prefer 21.
And test every one of them before they are allowed back into the community.
But they cannot leave US Citizens on that ship another day.
Trump made the right move.....VP, Pence is doing a terrific job with his team of experts. They are on-site and they should call the shots. Trump & Pence and, now Mark Meadows are an absolutely outstanding team of leaders for our beloved USA!!!
If you use the Yokohama example....a quarantine just ensures that a majority of guests and crew continue to spread it around the vessel. So it doesn’t matter if the ship is in port or anchored a mile off the coast.
One problem I see is that if you force a 14-day quarantine on the cruise ship...probably 10-percent of the guests will demand the alcohol tab be turned on, and mostly drink to excess. I don’t see this being a positive.
It presumably would be much safer for them to be off than on. But when must they have boarded the ship, almost two months into the crisis? I think we’re teetering on yhe edge of folks being on their own if they do that sort of thing.
It’s a cruise ship during the school year. So what’s the average age—probably about 70? If I were on there now in that situation, I think anchoring myself at the bar might be a solid response.
The entire ship population needs to be quarantined in Nancy Pelosi’s district. She has presented herself as the expert in these matters. Give her a chance to impress all of us and her district voters.
Naaah
Fly her out there by helicopter to be next weeks entertainment...
as for the booze they probably already have that free...
One of my neighbors works at Kaiser hospital in Woodland Hills, CA (about 25 miles from Los Angeles).
She told me tonight they have their 1st coronavirus patient.
I took a couple of big steps backward from her!!!
She said not to worry as she is admin and does not see patients....
I was on that ship several times, they have some nice bars, but it would not be what you think, because the wait staff and musicians would all be confined to their rooms. But you would be allowed to drink in your own stateroom.
But I am with the others, if you leave them on the boat the number of infections will rise to roughly one third of the total ship complement. The only advantage, given their ages, is that you could perform burial at sea. (Just a joke folks)
But since I am that age, I believe leaving them on the ship may be a death sentence if they have half the problems with their health as I have with mine. (age 74)
I like the Trump approach - stay at sea yeah it sucks, but its gonna suck less than letting them land. Sounds like Pence going to let them land - how about hell no. Dumb idea! For God sake president Trump let Mike Pence handle it - that sounds like leading from behind. Either this is serious or not - don’t pretend letting 3500 people off a corna virus petri dish isn’t going to be a disaster - what a bunch of horseshit

If we keep them on the ship, given the average age, there will be 300-500 deaths, maybe more. Every single person will get it. AND, there are enough other routes that the epidemic has already taken into the US that we will have it here. I see a political disaster.
OTOH, if we let them off and into quarantine on land it defuses the situation. If someone dies, it is China's fault, not Trump's.
I want public health, but I also want President Trump re-elected.
did she tell you how the person got the virus..im hoping the person didn’t go to kaiser..i belong to kaiser west la the person from lax screener went there to be tested
Here’s how well your “mandatory quarantine” works.
The people who make the real decisions have to face reality like this, or least I hope they are
Put them on Alcatraz. Turn it into a quarantine area. Actually as I was writing that, they should put the SF homeless there during the Corona virus epidemic.
How is that different from being confined to cabins on cruise ship? Consider there are infection risks —
* transporting them to alcatraz, the people escorting them, driving them, feeding them, doing maintenance and cleaning, making deliveries, doing health care, or even disposing of bodies.
Quarantines are imperfect, equipment is imperfect, people flee from quarantine and mistakes are made.
It may ultimately be safer to keep them on the ship.
Keep in mind even if 100% of the ship gets infected, it might ultimately result in fewer casualties than treating them off ship.
We know keeping them on the ship is a disaster after watching the Japan situation, you have to get them off ASAP. Government effectively executing 1/3 of the ship is bad optics in an election year. We just need a competent plan to quarantine, and a secure location.
