Italy's COVID-19 death toll has seen another sharp increase, with Rome reporting 49 new fatalities on Friday evening.
It means 90 people have died in just 48 hours, according to the latest figures from Italy's civil protection agency.
It comes as France announced it was closing creches and secondary schools in two of its most coronavirus-hit regions from Monday.
Earlier, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases globally rose above 100,000, according to researchers.
The Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) quoted several sources, including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC) in publishing its latest chart.
The disease has now killed 3,408 people, up from 3,281, the figures show.
On Friday, WHO put the number of infections at more than 98,000 and implored countries to trace contacts and find cases.
"Every day we can slow the epidemic is another day hospitals can prepare themselves for cases," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
"In a globalised world, the only option is to stand together. All countries should really make sure that we stand together."
Italy: Europe's worst-hit country
A day after announcing it would shut all schools and universities for two weeks, Italy reported a sharp hike in COVID-19 deaths.
The death toll jumped from 107 people on Wednesday to 148 on Thursday. Then by 49 on Friday, to 197.
The northern regions of Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy which surround Milan remain the worst-hit with nearly three-quarters of all the country's infections.
Lombardy has had 98 deaths and 2,251 cases; Emilia-Romagna 30 fatalities and 698 infections.
Angelo Borrelli, who heads up Italy's civil protection agency, said the outbreak had not hit the number of hospital beds available.
"For the moment, there are no major difficulties regarding the number of beds available

Hows the evil pope doing?
True dat.
Who cares my paesani are dying left and right.
Pop was born there.
This saddens me.
I mostly know people in Sicily.
Hope it doesn’t spread there
I’m waiting for the “I told you so” posts to me.
That they are dying in large numbers in Italy SUCKS.
You guys were right.
This thing could take a lot people with it.
Perhaps Italy is getting hit especially hard because of a comparative shortage of children?
The Pope is just proving again that Popes are fallible.
“WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“In a globalized world, the only option is to stand together. All countries should really make sure that we stand together.”
Says the corrupt bureaucrat.
What is he going to recommend next, group hugs and kisses?
And hows that overpriced WHO project you are building, in your home town, with international funds, going, eh? Typical UN boondoggle.
USA
So far, 16,000 people have died and 280,000 people have been hospitalized during the 2019-2020 flu season, according to preliminary estimates from the CDC.Feb 21, 2020
So France panics over just 200??????
The phrase ‘ take a lot of people’ is a relative term.
During the last flu outbreak, here in the United States an average of 4 people died EVERY HOUR.
Could have been worse.
I had one freeper tell me to “rot in hell you POS”, for debunking his liberal conspiracy comment.
I wish we were wrong.
Our best hope is still aggressively stopping/slowing the spread until summer/medications/vaccines arrive.
The WHO said today not to bet on summer stopping it. That they had no evidence that it would stop it.
It did spread in Singapore in 80 degree weather. But Singapore got control of it temporarily, though I see it’s starting to spread again.
France on the other hand, announced they had community spread and there was nothing they could do. Their surrender has catapulted them near the top of the list.
51 new cases in the US today and the day’s not over yet.
OMG. What a disaster.
And what that “freeper” said was disgusting.
Makes no feel as bad now :)
The ONE thing we got going for us here is it looks like we’re doing pretty well with recoveries.
That hit at the elderly facility was awful but I think most of us in our middle age and even up to 75 or so if you’re in good shape, has a good shot at surviving it.
But I don’t want to find out if my body can!!
And my mom and my aunt, it’s a death sentence, I’m sure of it.
Italy with their very old population and big tourist industry is in a world of hurt.
I think there were something like 250 cases of teens catching it up until
a few days ago.
The one good thing about hitting a nursing home first, is it is making people take it more seriously.
And nursing homes across the country are reviewing their infection control techniques.
But even if they tested every employee every day. It’s a 4 hour return on the test. By the time you get a positive, you’ve got spread.
The only way a nursing home is going to be able to prevent it, is to basically form a closed community with their staff, until it blows over. Staff can’t go anywhere or meet anyone outside of their closed community.

All the gambling casinos full of old ladies at the slots...hmm...

“As I understand it, kids and teens hardly catch it.
I think there were something like 250 cases of teens catching it up until a few days ago.”

They catch it, alright, but it doesn’t affect them as heavily as it does adults/older folks.
It could be that they’re largely asymptomatic, so you don’t have them showing up at hospitals and clinics and actual numbers aren’t being reported.
During all of this time they can pass it on to others.
“The Pope is just proving again that Popes are fallible.”
All Popes are always fallible except for communicating ex cathedra. The last time this occurred was in 1950.
