Legal Marijuana Sales In Illinois Total Nearly $35 Million For February
CBS Chicago ^ | March 4, 2020

CHICAGO (CBS) — Statewide legal marijuana sales in Illinois totaled nearly $35 million in the month of February, according to the state.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation announced preliminary numbers showed statewide sales totaled $34,805,072.01 for February. Dispensaries sold 831,600 items in total, with $25,615,371 worth being purchased by Illinois residents, and $9,189,701.01 being purchased by out-of-state residents.

The figures do not include taxes collected. The state charges a 7% tax on the sales of cannabis by cultivators and craft growers to dispensaries.

The governor’s office has estimated cannabis tax revenues will grow to $127 million in fiscal year 2021, which begins July 1.

A portion of every cannabis sale will be reinvested in “communities harmed most by the failed war on drugs,” the state said.

“These numbers show there continues to be a strong demand across the state as the most equity-centric cannabis program in the country moves forward in Illinois,” Toi Hutchinson, Senior Advisor for Cannabis Control to Gov. J.B. Pritzker, said in a news release. “As the adult use cannabis industry continues to grow, so will the number of opportunities for consumers and entrepreneurs alike – especially those from communities who suffered the most during the failed war on drugs.”

The Illinois Department of Agriculture is now accepting applications for cannabis infuser, craft grower, and transporter licenses. They must be filed by Monday, March 16 at 5 p.m.

Social equity applicants will receive additional points on their applications and may receive technical assistance, grants, low-interest loans and fee reductions, and waivers.

If that is in addition to a sales tax charged to the end user, it's a start. But the total sales or whatever they call it tax payable to the state most likely does not cover the cost of drug use in Illinois. Probably should be closer to 20 or 25%; especially if such a high percentage is out of state purchasers.

I’d but my pot from the neighborhood dealer, If I were so inclined. I don’t want the state with a record of me making such a purchase.

LOL! At least they're somewhat less likely than illegal marijuana sellers to leave severed heads in the town square.

Please elucidate: What "costs" are those; which of them are the proper object of government action; and how much less (if at all) were those costs before legalization?

Police enforcement, incarceration, rehabilitation programs, overhead. Of course, if you want to call that proper object of government action, then it becomes an allocation project, where the correct response would be, "what do you want the number to be?"

Compare it to a highway use tax, or a fuel tax, where the purpose of the tax is pay for the costs imposed by the user activity. (use of state roads causes a need to maintain the roads).

The government will end up paying much more than that in homelessness clean-up, addiction treatment, psychological treatment, etc. Legalizing a neurotoxin just makes it's blast-radius larger.

I have a friend whose daughter is raising her young family less than half a mile from the Illinois border.

She is not a fan.

The money is still going to criminals... but they are now calling themselves “progressives”. The damage marijuana does to society is far worse than the amount initially collected by sellers. Having lived in an area where it has been legal for “medical purposes” for over 30 years and “recrearional” purposes since 2012... its a complete fiasco. I am so happy that you can come on a conservative forum and rub it in our faces day after day. What a guy!

Police enforcement, incarceration, rehabilitation programs, overhead.

The first looks to be less, and the rest no more, than before legalization.

Nonsense - legalizing states have seen modest if any increases in use. In WA, use grew no faster after legalization than it had been before.
