Novel=new. This is a new virus- never seen before. It is a member of the corona virus family. The common cold is also a corona virus.
We haven’t any built-in immunity to this virus.

A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.
Because it is a virus strain new (novel) to humans. There are many strains of coronaviruses, some that cause 15-30% of common colds. Coronaviruses have been around for a long time but were IIRC first identified in the early 1960's. But SARS and MERS were also coronaviruses and like COVID-19 cause much more serious illnesses. SARS and MERS were also novel to humans when they first appeared.
The danger of the "novel" virus is that no one has any prior immunity along with many other unknowns.

Yeah, if I had to guess I would say 90% chance of natural/nature transfer from animals to humans, with a 10% chance of “it came from Saudi Arabia to Canada, was stolen from Canada by China and then accidentally released by their lab in Wuhan”.
