Why would anyone carry that much cash on them? If you’re going even internationally, there have been safer ways for decades.

Some people are paranoid about the Feds, space aliens, etc. Being paranoid is not a crime.

Its NOBODY’s business how much cash you have or how you choose to run your life. Before progressives took over, Americans Constitutional rights were sacred and we could live our lives and manage our property as we saw fit.

Did Mr. Federal Agent have ANY evidence of a crime? No! In that case they should just f*** off.

“Why would anyone carry that much cash on them?”

How about “it’s none of your damned business”. Does that work for you?

Sure. But it’s none of anyone’s business.

Why would anyone carry that much cash on them?

Because they wanted to.

This is the correct answer in a free country:

It’s nobody’s business but theirs.

There is an other case with a guy flying to Florida to buy a bunch of used big rigs. In his case it was almost $200,000. And in their business, cash is the preferred method.

There are plenty of stories about people with $12k or $20k on their way to purchase a car in another state off Craigslist, they get stopped by the cops, the cops search the car, find the money, and keep it because it “must be” drug money. Except there is no evidence that it is other than its mere existence.

The whole thing is repugnant. Nobody carries tens of thousands of dollars around with them every day, but it is not uncommon to have the need on occasion, especially if you are not a fan of credit cards or checks.

I have carried thousands of dollars to classic car shows in order to purchase cars I might want. Most sellers will not take a check especially when the transfer of ownership will occur at the time of sale. When I moved to the Philippines I brought close to $20,000 so that we could build a house. I did not have a Philippine bank account at the time and the local rural bank did not have a “dollar” account. I changed the dollars to Philippine Pesos when I needed to buy materials and pay labor.

There are thousands of legitimate reasons to have large sums of cash on you at any time. Unless L/E can make a case that meets warrant criteria they should not be allowed to seize the money.

While it may be foolish to carry large amounts of cash, that is completely irrelevant to the issue of CAF. If there is no probable cause, then there is a clear violation of someone’s 4th and 5th Amendment rights.
