The recent spread of the coronavirus is causing a global panic. Our shared terror arises not so much from the death toll of the new flu-like disease -- more than 3,000 people have died worldwide -- but from what we don't know about it.
Experts at least agree that the virus originated in China. But Beijing's authoritarian government hid information about its origins, spread and severity for weeks.
Such duplicity only fanned the fears of a global plague -- a hysteria not seen since the groundless fears of a YK2 global computer meltdown in the year 2000, or the political feeding frenzy during the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.
Wild speculation followed that the coronavirus was a virulent or mutated superbug. Had it arisen naturally or escaped from a nearby military lab? Did it originate from a sick lab animal? A conspiracy theory arose that it was a manufactured virus that had escaped from scientists' botched efforts to create either a vaccine or a biological weapon.
Is the outbreak an indication that China's scientists are well behind their Western peers, at least in the areas of virology and bacteriology? Or is the problem that Chinese culture still features outdated traditions such as open-air "wet markets"? Unfounded rumors spread that the virus may have originated in one of these markets, where exotic mammals such as bats and pangolins are still sold for human consumption. For all China's gleaming high-speed-rail lines and new airports, hundreds of millions of Chinese still live in places with suspect food safety and waste disposal -- the historic incubators of epidemics.

My guess (based on the Chinese response, isolating a city of 13 millions) was that it was a biological weapon that “escaped” from a lab. This was before knowing the lab was within walking distance of the first hot spot.
It has been reported that the it is highly contagious with a long incubation period before someone with it begins to show symptoms.
Once symptoms appear death could be within days (but not everyone that gets the virus dies)
Now what military use is a biological weapon that does not begin to have effect for weeks after exposure?
I would say none.

China and the US is in a Trade War. Similar to the US and Japan prior to WWII. The Chinese knows they could not win a real military war so they had to come up with a way to hurt the US economically. Make everyone sick, force a shut down of the US economy.
The virus was not suppose to get out into the Chinese mainland. I believe that was an accident. The rapid spread of the virus show just how easy it is to spread it around the world.
The original idea (if I was writing the script) was to have the thousands of Chinese that currently live and work in the US but return to China for holidays to be exposed to the virus as they were leaving and they in turn would expose everyone they come in contact with.

Who is the they that won’t tell you anything? They are telling you everything even things that don’t matter. Wash your hands frequently, stay away from crowds, prepare your own food at home, wash your hands frequently, avoid public transportation, don’t go on cruises or airline flights, wash your hands frequently, eventually it will blow over. Everything else is hyped for media effect.

Except the R0 rate. This is basic, foundational info.
The data you get may be reliable but it will not be complete. What are you describing as “cases”? Is it a diagnosis confirmed by a proven test? But even with that you will not know the number of infections.
They key parameter is how many people have contracted it and how many healthy young people die. I say this as a not so healthy senior citizen. Any flu or even a cold kill the aged and infirmed. .
I was younger of course when the first SARS outbreak hit and I didn’t give it a second thought. I asked my parents about the 1957 flu which and they do not even remember it. It killed 70,000 which would be roughly 140,000 for today’s population.
I would be interested to hear from Freepers who remember the 1957 flu epidemic.
This flu seems nothing like that one.
