One thousand people who may have come into contact with a New York attorney who infected his wife, two children and a neighbor with coronvirus have been ordered to self-quarantine as the US death toll rises to 11.

In total, 11 people have now died from the COVID-19 coronavirus across the country as the number of confirmed cases has soared to more than 150.

Nine of the deaths have occurred in Washington state while California recorded its first death on Wednesday.

Health officials in Los Angeles County - which has about 10 million residents - also declared a health emergency on Wednesday after six new cases were confirmed in less than 48 hours, bringing the total in the city to seven and raising the California state case figure to 35.

The New York cases rose to six on Wednesday after officials confirmed that the Manhattan attorney's wife, 20-year-old son, 14-year-old daughter and neighbor had all tested positive for coronavirus.

The 50-year-old attorney, who lives in Westchester County and commutes to his midtown Manhattan law firm, had been confirmed as the state's second case on Tuesday.

The attorney remains in intensive care at the New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. Health officials said the attorney has severe pneumonia that potentially put him in more danger than others from the disease.

His family remain quarantined in their home in New Rochelle. The neighbor, who initially drove the attorney to the hospital when he started suffering from coronavirus symptoms last Friday night, is also under self-quarantine at home.

Following the positive tests, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said about 1,000 people in Westchester County and New York City will be contacted by health professionals and asked to self-quarantine.

As one person pointed out on the thread of the party goer who ignored quarantine - we are not a nation that will want to obey.

God Speed to those who are responsible enough to do it.

And as a reminder from the Doc in Italy...in the beginning people test negative because the viral load isn’t high enough. They come back later with shortness of breath and test positive.

“Maybe if he went on the subway everyday for a few weeks”

I imagine they could ID people traveling at the same time from prepaid fares on their credit card.

Yeah, but how does he commute - by car, by train, by bus, by subway?
It makes a difference!

What pisses me off is they claim the Wuhan virus is more virulent than other strains but, of the 15 or so strains of Flu each year:

During the 2018–2019 season, 136 deaths in children with laboratory–confirmed influenza virus infection were reported in the United States8.

However, influenza-associated pediatric deaths are likely under-reported as not all children whose death was related to an influenza virus infection may have been tested for influenza9,10.

By combining data on hospitalization rates, influenza testing practices, and the frequency of death in and out of the hospital from death certificates, we estimate that there were approximately 480 deaths associated with influenza in children during 2018–2019.

Our estimates of hospitalizations and mortality associated with the 2018–2019 influenza season continue to demonstrate how serious influenza virus infection can be. We estimate, overall, there were 490,600 hospitalizations and 34,200 deaths during the 2018–2019 season. More than 46,000 hospitalizations occurred in children (aged <18 years); however, 57% of hospitalizations occurred in older adults aged ≥65 years.

Older adults also accounted for 75% of influenza-associated deaths, highlighting that older adults are particularly vulnerable to severe outcomes resulting from an influenza virus infection. An estimated 8,100 deaths occurred among working age adults (aged 18–64 years), an age group that often has low influenza vaccination uptake11.

Conclusion

CDC estimates that influenza was associated with more than 35.5 million illnesses, more than 16.5 million medical visits, 490,600 hospitalizations, and 34,200 deaths during the 2018–2019 influenza season. This burden was similar to estimated burden during the 2012–2013 influenza season1. "

"Typically strikes those over 65 in larger proportion and kills that same demographic in disproportionately higher numbers than other demo's due to the likely hood they have pre-existing underlying conditions which are complicated by any flu or cold..."

Death of patient with COVID-19

Placer County Public Health is reporting that a resident has died of COVID-19. The person, an elderly adult with underlying health conditions, was the second confirmed case of COVID-19 in the county and is now the first to die from the illness in California.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of this patient,” said Placer County Health Officer Dr. Aimee Sisson. “While we have expected more cases, this death is an unfortunate milestone in our efforts to fight this disease, and one that we never wanted to see.

“While most cases of COVID-19 exhibit mild or moderate symptoms, this tragic death underscores the urgent need for us to take extra steps to protect residents who are particularly vulnerable to developing more serious illness, including elderly persons and those with underlying health conditions.”

The patient tested presumptively positive on Tuesday at a California lab and was likely exposed during international travel from Feb. 11-21 on a Princess cruise ship that departed from San Francisco to Mexico. The patient was in isolation at Kaiser Permanente Roseville.

‘Obey’?

Well … what did they think they would happen when they threw open the boarders to everyone on earth?

Did they think the boarder was just a line on a map to be ignored because people wanted to push THEIR PC agenda?

Are boarders only about geography? How stupid can people BE?

Seriously?

The guy commuted to Grand Central Station--and the folks who commute to that station are _not included in the total. How do I know that?:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Central_Terminal

21 million visitors a year
67 million passengers a year
A train arrives once a minute

_That_ is what loss of containment looks like...

_That_ is why Governor Cuomo is very somber and reasonable sounding this week.
