People in Ontario living with HIV had a 34 per cent higher incidence rate of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and were diagnosed with the disease about 12 years younger than HIV-negative individuals, according to a study led by researchers at St. Michael's Hospital of Unity Health Toronto and ICES.
Researchers analyzed incidences of COPD among adults 35 years and older who were living with and without HIV between 1996 and 2015 in Ontario - where over 40 per cent of Canadians living with HIV reside.
People with HIV were diagnosed with COPD at a mean age of 50 years old compared with 62 for HIV-negative individuals.

Its probably that higher rates of smoking in people with HIV is the main culprit, but the question still remains why people with HIV have higher rates of smoking.

No surprise here. It is only natural for HIV+ to be more susceptible to any opportunistic infections and for the smokers to pulmonary ones.
To: fwdude
In conclusion, try not to get HIV.

People with HIV likely have a lot of self destructive habits. Totaled together, they often prove fatal.

Additionally, the not-a-gay disease seems to be especially pronounced in gays, who also are known to smoke at much higher rates than the general public. Hmmm.....

There's probably higher rates of anxiety. Many smokers take up tobacco to deal with stress.
You'll find the gay community is ripe with vicious, judgmental, disloyal, unfaithful, deceptive and exploitive members which is part of why HIV spreads like it does. Too many lie about their status and are sociopathic, others don't care enough about themselves to prevent acquiring the virus. They just seem serial hookups so they feel some kind of momentary connection. The best thing that could happen in that community for long term health is social development of courtship rituals and committed long term relationships.

A few years ago there were many homosexual men saying they sought out HIV positive partners to “get it over with” so they could quit stressing about it.

Dude, can you imagine St. Michael's creating that synopsis and not ONE WORD about whether or not that group was on the AZT prep or whatever cohort and whether or not there was a control group???
Damn! It's just unreal the sloppiness in systemic viral epidemiology.

Not really. HIV destroys the immune system. I would expect the HIV+ community to acquire just about every disease, on average, at an earlier age than HIV- people. 12 years is a big jump, but for a condition that generally affects older people, there's going to be a bigger gap to when HIV+ people tend to get it.
