How Does the Coronavirus Compare to the Flu?
NY SLimes ^ | 2/29/20 | Denise Grady

As new cases appear on the West Coast, some — including the president — see comparisons to the seasonal flu. Here’s a close look at the differences.

Which virus is deadlier?

The coronavirus seems to be more deadly than the flu — so far.

On average, seasonal flu strains kill about 0.1 percent of people who become infected. The 1918 flu had an unusually high fatality rate, around 2 percent. Because it was so contagious, that flu killed tens of millions of people.

Early estimates of the coronavirus death rate from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak, have been around 2 percent. But a new report on 1,099 cases from many parts of China, published on Friday in The New England Journal of Medicine, finds a lower rate: 1.4 percent.

The coronavirus death rate may be even lower, if — as most experts suspect — there are many mild or symptom-free cases that have not been detected.

The true death rate could turn out to be similar to that of a severe seasonal flu, below 1 percent, according to an editorial published in the journal by Dr. Anthony S. Fauci and Dr. H. Clifford Lane, of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Dr. Robert R. Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Accuse me of hysteria. Hope you’re right.

As far as the incinerator activity, there have been satellite pictures of very dense sulfur dioxide emissions. And reports of additional incinerators ordered.

In any event, if it’s no worse than flu, it still must be an exceptional epidemic for there to be disinfectant fumigations, forced quarantines in field hospitals, and provincial quarantines.

Unless, of course, that’s just Chinese agit-prop to raise their image in the world.

A few weeks... we’ll have a better idea, one way or the other.

I don’t think skeptical caution is hysteria, but if it makes you feel better to call me names, enjoy.

Ebola is deadlier than the flu too but I would be more concerned with dying from the flu since there is more chance of getting it.

there is even more chance of getting a cold; are you more concerned with dying from it?

Accuse me of hysteria.

know what?   yesterday the daily mail published pictures of US supermarkets supposedly stripped of groceries, claiming hoarding and shortages.

I found (delicious) pork chops at my market TONIGHT, but instead of the usual $1.69/lb they were $1.49/lb.

I'm sick and tired of your pathetic hysteria inspired by the satanic left.

Your main problem is that you believe the numbers the Chinese government has been releasing. The whole problem has been the inaccurate numbers coming out of China and the skewed death numbers.

One way to gauge the perceived risk in China is to compare the response they made to what the CDC recommends for pandemic flu events. The Chinese response in Wuhan seems to follow the approach recommended by the CDC for a high mortality rate pandemic flu, with a dose of Chinese authoritarianism mixed in. Given the problems they have seen so far, and the percentage of patients and health care workers with serious complications it makes sense that they took the kind of measures they took.

Take a look at the CDC recommendations for non medical interventions published here.

"The coronavirus death rate may be even lower, if — as most experts suspect — there are many mild or symptom-free cases that have not been detected."

This is a factor that most aren't taking into account.

Not everyone in the world that has Covid-19 has been to a hospital or clinic to be counted.

Since only a few hundred have been tested in our country, coupled with a shortage of test kits...that aren't that accurate to begin with and the very narrow testing guidelines the CDC had until just a few days ago, it wouldn't be surprising if there were already 5,000 to 10,000 asymptomatic or low symptom infections here in the U.S.

Even going with just 1,000...that would be a mortality rate just like the "seasonal" flu.

Covid-19 is being hyped, primarily, by those in the media that want to end Trumps re-election bid.

A stock market meltdown with an economic downturn could do just that. Not with his conservative base...but with those (D)'s and "independents" that voted for him in 2016, whom he must get again to be re-elected.

The last major economic downturn, in 2008, produced a usurper in the White House. A junior senator from IL with a questionable/unknown background named Barak Hussein Obama. A guy named Hussein, a few years removed from 9/11.

Panicked, hysterical people do stupid things.

The markets aren’t hurt by Americans panicking. Look where most of our manufactured products come from. This is what is hurting markets the most.

Don’t trust. Be self reliant, and be prepared.

Have food, alternative power sources, water, medical supplies, practice safe public protocol. Make sure your older and vulnerable friends and family have a safe situation and are doing safe practices.

Am I paranoid? No. I’m prepared. So should you be.
