New York will ban single-use plastic bags in stores starting March 1.
The states ban, which was passed last year by the state legislature, will impact both grocery and department stores. New York is the third state to introduce a plastic bag ban, joining California and Oregon, as a way to curb the amount of plastic going to landfills.
Instead of receiving a plastic bag at the checkout counter, customers will have to provide their own reusable bags or take a paper bag from the store with a five-cent tax. Customers using food stamps will be exempt from the bag tax.
If you have a small purchase, such as a magazine, candy or drink, you can help our environment by saying, No, thank you, to a single-use paper bag and carrying the item instead, New Yorks Department of Environmental Conservation said in a press release.
Those who do not comply with the bag ban face a first-time fine of $250 and fines up to $500 for repeated infractions, but the state will not start issuing penalties until April, the Associated Press reported.
Environmentalists welcome the law while small business owners worry the ban might negatively affect sales.
There are, however, some exemptions to the ban. Bags for food takeout, prescription drugs, garment bags, newspapers, and bags for nonpackaged meat and fish will still be plastic.

Who gets fined; The store or the individual?
If it’s the store, I could now buy the rolls of surplus bags now on the cheap and sell them to my neighbors.
Keep a roll in the car, and dispense as needed.
Better than those Wuhan-collecting re-usable bags.

I guess these geniuses have no clue on how paper is made. Or how bacteria can adhere to reusable bags.
I’m a free citizen under no obligation to ‘help the environment’ especially as coerced by the state.
To be honest , I have never cared for those plastic bags as they take forever to breakdown and they take away from the paper industry which has been in a tailspin for decades . I prefer paper when shopping for anything . The packaging industry as a whole has incorporated plastics to the point where our trash cans and streets / waterways are inundated with materials that simply do not breakdown as paper would . It may sound like an old curmudgeonly outlook but I lived in Maine for quite a long time and I always looked at purchases with what I could do with the packaging after the item was used . The plastic bags I find useless ....cardboard is far easier for our surroundings to deal with as opposed to plastic ...
And by-the-by, the best store in the world, ALDI, has been doing this forever.
Just grab a box.
They don’t have anywhere near the “waste” problem of other stores.
And I forgot to say it was nice to have something to get my log’s or coal fired up for heat.
I use plastic bags for when I scoop out the cat litter box.
How about those little plastic bags of meth or heroin?
The landfill is growing like a volcano due to them.
Tax the heck out of them.
What if I bring my own previously-issued plastic bags into he store to carry my purchases in? I want to see them try to stop me. They don’t want to tick this old lady off.
In CA, I started saving my plastic bags a couple months before the ban went into effect. That was about 3 years ago. I keep them under my sink (cool and dark, so no deterioration). I am still reusing the originals that I first started using. My stash will probably last me the rest of my life.
This is also the situation in Hawaii, it is illegal to use plastic bags.
“Customers using food stamps will be exempt from the bag tax” No bag tax for the bag lady.
I used them too when I had my cats. I've been collecting plastic bags for years. I've got a giant bag full of them, and they'll last me until I die.
