US, Taliban set peace signing for America's longest war

America's longest war may finally be nearing an end.

The United States and the Islamists it toppled from power in Afghanistan are poised to sign a peace deal Saturday after a conflict that outlasted two U.S. commanders in chief and is now led by a third eager to fulfill a campaign promise to extricate America from “endless wars."...

...U.S. troops are to be withdrawn to 8,600 from about 13,000 in the weeks following Saturday's signing. Further drawdowns are to depend on the Taliban meeting certain counter-terrorism conditions, compliance that will be assessed by the United States. But officials say soldiers will be coming home...

...In a statement released by the White House, Trump said Friday that if the Taliban and Afghan governments live up to the commitments in the agreement, "we will have a powerful path forward to end the war in Afghanistan and bring our troops home,”

“These commitments represent an important step to a lasting peace in a new Afghanistan, free from al-Qaida, ISIS and any other terrorist group that would seek to bring us harm," Trump said.

Under the agreement, the Taliban promise not to let extremists use the country as a staging ground for attacking the U.S. or its allies...

What is that supposed to mean? WWII ended ~75 years ago and we still have soldiers in Germany and Japan.

They will no longer have to look down and watch more of their brothers being sent to their deaths for a pointless war.

This is what we should do to honor them best and support those who are still with us.

At the very least we should get mineral rights to that God forsaken, heathen infested country. That’s if there’s anything there. I can’t believe there wouldn’t be. The Chicoms will probably get the resources anyway. If there isn’t any then screw that place.

Just how do you propose to protect Americans who are mining for these minerals?

Trump is smart enough to recognize that the troops in Afghanistan are effectively hostages to Pakistan’s good will. We need to pull them out of there.

Then Trump can give India a green light to settle business in Kashmere.

Let the Chinese have the headaches of dealing with the Afghans.

A private security force with no ROEs. Plenty of money in the minerals, and lots of pay perks working there. Enough sacrifice of military lives with no ability to protect themselves, for minerals or for any other reason.

Bingo. Then hopefully we can begin to kick China to the curb and align our business interests with India instead of a communist dictatorship. Not saying India is perfect.

I remember thinking when we learned how precise the hits have been in taking out the leaders of several terrorist groups...”I’ll bet we will be hearing from the Taliban Leaders.”

I know I would have placed a call to President Trump after the THIRD DIRECT HIT, if I were a Leader of a Terrorist Group.

Praise the Lord, I pray this is the end of this war.

Currently in my podcast I am talking about the Vietnam War, and this news from Afghanistan reminds me of the cease-fire signed over Vietnam in 1973. Everyone here knows how that turned out, right?
