A long-developing proxy clash in Syria between Russia and Turkey is very much moving into crisis mode, a senior American diplomat said amid reports that Turkish troops were attacked in an airstrike.
Oh my gosh, Kay Bailey Hutchison, the U.S. ambassador to NATO, exclaimed Thursday when she learned from journalists that more than 20 Turkish service members reportedly have been killed. Let me say this because I just learned this: Of course, everything is on the table. This is a new development. This is a big development.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called an emergency meeting of his national security team late Thursday as local media reported that Russia targeted a Turkish command post in Idlib. Turkish officials blamed the strike on Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, who has survived the civil war by virtue of Russian and Iranian military support for his regime.
"Turkey early Friday carried out missile attacks on targets in Syria's central Hama, northwestern towns of Nubl and Zahraa, as well as in regime and Russian bastion, Latakia, in response to the Assad regime airstrike that killed 22 Turkish soldiers," the Daily Sabah, a Turkish outlet, reported after the meeting.
Hutchison was troubled about the prospect of a crisis even before learning of that report because Russia is trying to help Syrian dictator Bashar Assad reconquer the last major rebel stronghold in Syria while Turkey backs opposition groups in the area in part due to fear that millions of Syrian civilians will flee to Europe if Assad wins the battle for Idlib.

Turkey hasnt been our ally for awhile now. Kick them out of NATO.
US kids are NOT going to die protecting Turks - Trump will quit NATO first
This is attention-getting to me because seemed to me that Russia and Turkey had been on fairly friendly terms lately.
The Turks are not our allies. Who gives a hoot.
Kay Bailey?!?!! We are in deep doo doo.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but afaik this attack occurred on Syrian territory. It wasn’t an attack on Turkey but on Turkish forces occupying part of Turkey. They may have their reasons, but if this was an attack on NATO then every attack against American troops abroad is an attack on NATO.
^ Sorry, I meant ...”Turkish forces occupying part of Syria.”
Yep, that’s some unorthodox reading of Article 5.
The Turkish regime is our enemy, not our friend. Typical of hardline Muslims, nobody invades them, but they think they have a right to invade others.
Not our fight, I don’t care.
Don’t look at us.

A concern for neocons and globalists, but not for normal people.
I have had nothing but contempt for the Turks since the conquest of Constantinople and the desecration of Hagia Sophia.
Turk? {{{SPIT}}}
I’m with you.
The Turks invaded.
They’ve been a PITA since at least 2001 - wouldn’t let 4th ID go overland into north IQ, and they buy Russkie SAMs.
F’em.
Agreed. Turkey is a runaway Islamic republic Fem. We need to rebalance the world and it is coming if we want it or not.
The world is shifting below our feet. Feel it.
She was a nightmare in Texas...
What does she live in a cocoon? It's been all over Twitter recently. Turkey has invaded Syria.
