President Donald Trump is considering invoking special powers through the 1950 Defense Production Act to ramp up the production of protective masks and clothing because you guessed it all that stuff comes from China.
The establishment sold us out for money and this is one consequence. Now, Trump has managed to make corporations think about the China supply chain since day one but this emergency reminds us of how far we have yet to go.
Very little of this stuff is apparently made in the United States, so if were down to domestic capability to produce, it could get tough, the DHS official told Reuters on why Trump may make this move.
The United States needs a stockpile of about 300 million N95 face masks to combat the virus but we have only a small fraction of that available.

Ramp it up and make long term strategic decisions for the future so we dont find ourselves in this situation again.
I agree. Excellent on finding this.
Ramp it up.
And then put high import tariffs on those goods to protect the industries here.
Ramp up multiple firms so they can complete though.
Good..he should..the masks we got from CVS are made, in China would be nice if they actually made them here
It will end up costing at least $100 per mask if Uncle Sugar gets involved in production.
How long will it be before some prog or fed-judge says PDJT cant do that?
.
Good news. Hopefully doing the same with pharmaceuticals.
I think the powers he is trying to reactivate will give him what he needs to do that.
This is Trump's wheelhouse. He'll get 'er done.
There’s money to be made
Lawyers will claim the masks are ineffective and create a massive law suit
Hmmm, and Trump has been telling us for dogs years that we shouldn’t be so dependent on China.
Not to worry, though. The MSM will make sure it’s still Trump’s fault.
You need a factory to ramp up production.
He can’t make them with a magic wand.
Correct me if I am wrong but this is how I think the law works. Let’s say you make radar for the government and microwave ovens for consumers. The two items can not be made on the same equipment. The law assumes that they can. The government would direct you to make 100% radars only. Until you have filled the government’s order for radars you can not make any microwave ovens. (A company I worked for was threatened with this. The government knew that we were at maximum capacity and they were threatening to take away the one profitable, unrelated line we had to force the company to essentially sh*t the equipment they wanted.)
This only works if the company has government contracts. If not, it has no force. Also, the company thus effected may no bid future contracts. If this is the law they are using, they are not going to get the results they want. They should offer carrots, not sticks.
Absolutely. They need to listen to him for a change.
Dont fret. We have a President in full command of the situation.
It would be wise to move on this now.

Absolutely! In addition to protective gear this special power should be used to repatriate domestic production of critical medications and their raw materials FOR STARTERS!

Actually, after 9/11 I learned a bit about this.
My company made perforated metal, including heavy plate with holes in it. Believe it or not, it is used to make armor.
Bush signed an order that invokes a priority clause in law that said we must put the government order ahead of all others.
This is similar.
Just convert the machinery that makes Halloween masks...[/s]
You can never have too many placebo face masks.
The “Craftsman” brand tools are now completely pot-metal crap made in China. Starrett is made in China, too, now, and looks it.
America hasn’t cared. Americans want to save a nickel.
Unions are part of it. It’s more than a nickel when a Union smells money to take. But Americans also shouldn’t be forced to compete against slave labor in a “free market”.
It seems a little late to “notice” and be scared, now.
Trump really has been ahead of most on this. We really needed him at least 20 years ago.
I don’t think most Americans know what MAGA means.
