The huge amount of carbon dioxide we are producing and pumping into the Earth's atmosphere is causing much more damage than previously thought.
Rising CO2 levels aren't just responsible not for global warming; they also have a massive impact on the global food system, according to a Science Advances study.
An increase in carbon dioxide can significantly reduce the level of micronutrients in certain plants.
Researchers studied the effects of the gas on rice and it was found to contain significantly less protein, iron, zinc and B vitamins after exposure to the level of carbon dioxide our atmosphere is expected to harbor by the end of the century.
With several billion people on Earth already suffering from malnutrition, the repercussions of this would be devastating.
"Rice is a staple food source for about two billion people and the poorest of the population obtain over 50% of their daily nutrition in the form of rice," wrote Lewis Ziska, one of the authors of the study."Anything affecting the nutritional quality of rice will have serious effects."
The researchers point out that previous studies focused mainly on how climate change would change the cultivation of crops. "The quality of the plants and their nutrient content are just as important," says Ziska.
Ziska and his colleagues exposed rice fields planted for research purposes in China and Japan to increased carbon dioxide levels.
In doing so, they used values that, according to experts, will appear worldwide in this century as a result of humans.
The majority of the 18 test rice varieties contained significantly less protein, zinc, and iron than the rice cultivated today.
The researchers found that the content of Vitamins B1, B2, B5 and B9 has decreased dramatically in all varieties. However, the rice contained more Vitamin E.

Its just outright lies and junk science.
Um...deprive plants of their main nutrients and they become less nutritious.
BS!
A new study shows that when they are deprived of water and sunlight, they also become less nutritious.
Well, CO2 makes plants grow better, so food will be easier to grow and cheaper. If it’s somewhat less nutritious, just eat more of it.
This story and my comment about Tim’s made me think of what my Dad once told me about that franchise when it first started around the Toronto area back in the ‘60s. He remembered that they made peach wedges (or something like that) up until sometime in the ‘70s and those were the best things that they ever made.
You are absolutely correct.
And yet, the same liberals who will be touting this "study" to promote more regulations on CO2, are the ones protesting the production of the US-invented GMO crop 'Golden Rice' with its supercharged Vitamin A content to fight blindness in precisely these places dependent on ordinary rice.
The crazies are lose! But we will only have what 11 years left to live anyhow.
BI has almost as much credibility as The Gaurdian.
Even the hogwash isn’t as fun to read anymore.
This is pure $paid$ political diarrhea. In a reality, what is stated is anti-science. O2 is the threat to plants, not CO2 —
There is a lot of information on this, from NASA to University of Illinois. It is well understood, replicated, and manipulatable, including mineralization.
Yes, and this is printed as “new” news? I first heard it in the seventies, and it was all about global warming and acid rain and food losing it’s nutrients. Great way to sell supplements and smoothies, by the way, that’s when that whole market was launched; no more “One A Day”, it became all about the MANY vitamins you had to take and “whole foods” or supplements. Amazing how stupid and gullible and sheeplike we are...
I believe all the GMO crops are less nutritious just as hybrid trees wood quality is way less than natural or native trees.
Why there is huge money digging up old wood from the bottom of lakes because it is superior, harder wood with a better grain pattern.
Better pass out the Honey Buckets like china does so we can have more fertilizer available.
Examine the components of photosynthesis. CO2 is one of them.
COVID-19? NO! Were all gonna die due to excess CO2. Got it.
Oh, just stop. The level we’re projected to have by the end of the century? Any guesses as to how ridiculous that model is?
If nitrogen is limited, the benefit of the CO2 increase is limited
. You cant just look at CO2, because the overall context really matters. I would think (and I’m not a
botoninist), that a plants’ nutrient content is derived
from the soil it’s grown in.
It should be a felony to publish a false study.
Studies have shown that higher concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide affect crops in two important ways: they boost crop yields by increasing the rate of photosynthesis, which spurs growth, and they reduce the amount of water crops lose through transpiration.
That means areas with less rainfall can grow more plants aka food
So that’s why a Big Mac and fries tastes like sh*t anymore...
