The girl has never scored below a 96 on any test.
Shes No. 1 on the honor roll and the principal wants her to wear the state-mandated red scarf of the Communist youth organization, los pioneros, or shes out. Her parents refuse. Her mother is called in for a conference. The women argue.
The truce: The price for not wearing the pañoleta is being knocked down to second place for lack of revolutionary spirit. The top spot will go to a boy who is an eager and loyal pionerito (like decades later, a returned Elián González would be, too).
Her little brother, a smart-aleck class clown, also has to make adjustments.
When his teacher asks him to form a sentence with the words agrarian reform, her brother eagerly chimes in out loud: The agrarian reform is very sour! His sentence rhymes in Spanish and its a hit with classmates, but not with the teacher, an ardent revolutionary.
She is so mad she grabs him by an ear and pulls so hard and long that the boy bleeds all the way home.
Yes, by the time she leaves Cuba in 1969, this girl knows that the Cuban education system is dogmatic and abusive to innocent children who are ostracized for their parents beliefs.
Her parents heart-wrenching decision to leave it all behind and start a new life in Miami, saves her from worse. After their 12th birthdays, her friends have to enroll in la escuela al campo. They have to leave their home and their parents to live in barracks in the countryside and work in agricultural fields.

But they learned how to read and write:-!

BERNIE SANDER HAS BEEN A LEACH ON AMERICAN SOCIETY ALL HIS LIFE. HE HAS CONTRIBUTED PORN TO THE AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM AND THAT IS ALL. ANYONE WHO SUPPORTS THIS CLOWN IS A VERY UNINFORMED VOTER OR STUPID.
Burny is an evil man. How could someone want to change a country from God fearing, family first, free enterprise and happiness to total government control of every aspect of your life? He has to have made a deal with the Devil. What other explanation is there?
Our government had a real chance to take care of Castro at the Bay of Pigs. Someone wimped out.
Fabiola Santiago is a never-Trumper Democrat loyalist, but a true Castro hater.
If Bernie gets the Democratic nomination, you can pretty much write off Florida.
I don’t get how someone like her could be a Democrat.
Actually, I do, but...it makes no sense. Given the way Leftists are, it makes complete sense.
But how could someone who lived under “Castro Heavy” be a proud “Castro Light” voter?
Bump!
When I lived in Acton, MA, my neighbor across the street was a Cuban woman married to a Greek immigrant. She was a Democratic party activist. I always tried to remain cordial with her, and never, ever broached the topic of politics, but one day, in the driveway, she did introduce me to a vistor, Pam Resor, our Democratic state senator. I smiled and shook hands.
When I was growing up in Queens, I used to walk to school with a girl whose family immigrated from Cuba post Castro. She contacted me through Classmates, and got me to join facebook. We don’t keep in touch, but she moved to PR and was pretty much a run-of-the-mill PR Democrat. She moved to Miami after Hurricane Maria to care for her mother.
The Cuban people. It was a badly conceived attempt.
It used only first-wave refugees, who were Batiste loyalists. Second-wave refugees were disillusioned former supporters of the revolution. The revolution was fought for the declared purpose of restoring the 1940 Constitution, which Batiste had originally helped write and then betrayed in the Guelpe. Castro himself had originally ran for the Senate as a member of the Authentico Party, a reformist party opposed to communism and Batiste. Batiste had communists in his cabinet, for that matter. But the first-wave refugees wanted their old jobs back, and told the CIA not to allow any second-wave refugees participate, because “they’re all communists,” a cheap and easy smear. So the people in Cuba saw the invasion as an attempt by the old guard to regain control, which is exactly what it looked like and probably really was, and refused to support them. Thus, failing to gain popular support, Kennedy pulled the plug. This according to an essay entitled How Not To Carry Out a Coup, by an author very critical of Cuba, whose name I forgot. Wish I still had the book.
Excuse my lack of reading comprehension, but who can write off Florida?
The Democrats or the Republicans?
A is for America, Affluent and Avarice
B is for Bolivia, death place of C, as well as Batiste, the people’s enemy
C is for Che, Compadre of me, Cigar and Commie
D is for Duty, Devotion, and Death Squad
E is for Execution, Elections (hah!) and Equality
F is for Firing Squad, Fidel and his Family
G is for Guelpe, Guerilla and Gun
H is for Harvesting, in the Hot sun
I is for Imperialists, like the evil yanqui
When his name was mentioned, or the subject of Communist Cuba came up, the venom would show visibly on her face, and though she didn't do it, you had the distinct impression that in a different place than a social setting, she would have spat on the ground.
Even though she didn't, you had to think for second and wonder if she did and you just missed it, because the mannerisms like turning the head to the side slightly and angling to the ground as she spit out her words looked exactly the same!
They were both patriotic Americans and dedicated capitalists. When he died after leaving his job where I worked with him, he had been looking for venture capitalists to help him fund the purchase of a large scale foundry that made things like main mounts for large aircraft, etc.
I gave him a Bush/Cheney sticker for his car back in the 2004 election when he lived in the South End, and his car was vandalized (windshield wipers ripped off) and he had this note stuffed in his car window:

I admit, I felt guilty after the fact giving him the sticker because it put him in that position of kind of forcing him to put that sticker on his car while he was living in the fever swamp of Leftism that is the South End, but...in his gentlemanly and considerate fashion, he put his hand on my shoulder, and with a warm smile explained that it wasn't my decision to put the sticker on his car, but his.
All these years now, and I miss that guy. A real man, a real gentleman, a fine human being and a committed conservative. Jews would refer to him as a "mensch" even though he was a gentile...and a devout one. One of the most amazing professionals and people I ever worked with and one of my few bosses I socialized fully with.
How I miss him.
But if we vote for Bernie maybe Lil Mike can be given a chance to learn how to farm?

My personal favorite is kids don’t get milk after age seven. Go Bernie!
This reminds me of something that happened to me when I was a driver for an airport transport company years ago (2001-2005). I picked up this older woman in the area just south of Capitol Hill in Seattle. She was a cheerful woman, and I noticed she was wearing a vest that was full of buttons...you know, buttons that had pithy or comical sayings on them. When I scanned those buttons as she was getting on the van, I noticed many of them were not necessarily supportive of conservative thought, or the President at the time, George W.
As we drove to the airport, we got in a conversation about current events, and she expounded on how much she disliked the President. I tried steering the conversation to a more pleasant subject, but she was persistent. I then began to ask questions that would (I hoped) have her give answers that were positive for the US, but to no avail.
Finally, as we were approaching the airport, I asked “Given what you know about the countries of the world, and given what you know about all the freedoms you currently enjoy, if you had your choice to live anywhere, where would that be?”. Without a second’s hesitation, she practically yelled, “Cuba!”. I literally turned my head around (taking my eyes off the road) to look at her and asked “Cuba??”. She replied “Yes! The education is free, the healthcare is free, and sure-you can’t vote for who governs you, but other than that it’s a paradise!” I dropped her off at her airline and wished her a good day.
Oh...did I mention there was another passenger in the van? He was sitting in the very back, and he hadn’t said a word during the conversation.
He was Hispanic-looking and had the name of Ramirez, I think. As I got back in the van to take him to his airline, I looked in the rear-view mirror. He looked back at me, looked askance at the departing woman, looked back at me and shook his head in disgust.
I think I got a fairly good tip from him.
