Pittsburgh airport to phase out using boarding passes at security checkpoints

Travelers flying out of Pittsburgh International Airport will soon not have to display a boarding pass to get past security, airport officials said this week.

Boarding passes will still be required at the gate to board the plane.

Officials with the airport and Transportation Security Administration announced that Pittsburgh is among several U.S. airports set to phase out the use of boarding passes at security checkpoints this year.

Instead, they are shifting to sophisticated screening machines that can verify passengers based solely on a government-issued ID card.

The Credential Authentication Technology, or CAT, allows security agents to pinpoint passengers and their specific flights using only an approved ID, such as a driver’s license or passport.

In coming weeks, about 500 machines will be installed at airports in U.S. cities, including Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Charlotte, Miami, Austin and Seattle. One machine is already in use at Pittsburgh International Airport, according to the airport.

They did; when the fingerprinting was taking place.

There are somewhere between 10 and 30+ million people in this country who can not get REAL ID because they don’t have documents.

They are called illegal aliens and I sure hope so!

I’ve pretty much decided to ban myself. Did a shite-ton of flying before retirement, no real need to do it now. Don’t need the hassle of getting a Real ID card, no real interest in leaving the US of A. Home sweet home and only take off my shoes and belt when I choose to.

Saw this type of system being tested in Seattle (IIRC) last month while flying. Seemed to work well but it was a little unnerving. It did seem to speed that part of the process up but then back to the usual conveyor belt/coat off, pockets empty routine. I have mixed feelings, but then no one asked me . . .

“I’m surprised the don’t take a DNA sample.”

So that’s what TSA was doing

I’m amazed at how many people don’t mind the TSA. I have flown once in 15 years.

...Not to beat a dead horse again... Why can't we do the same thing at voting places?...

With current facial recognition technology we could accomplish the same end by just taking everyone's picture at the voting place. Even if the person is not in a current database, he could easily be added as voter #1, voter #2, etc.

This overcomes all court objections to the time, cost and inconvenience of obtaining voter ID and would cut down immensely on voter fraud. As well as giving evidence of any illegal voting.

This is why the RATs are so opposed to facial recognition...

Read the article. You’ll still need to be booked on a flight to get past security. They will verify identity based on your drivers license instead of an actual boarding pass. They were trying this in Chicago a year or so ago.

Agreed. I only fly (commercial) when work absolutely requires it. I’ll fly aerobatics in my buddy’s stunt plane, but commercial “pleasure” travel is non-existent. Like you said, if I can’t drive or ride there, I don’t need to get there.

Do you really believe that the courts are going to allow them to be banned from air travel?
*******************************************************
I certainly believe those adults who don’t have a REAL ID license or its equivalent (e.g., passport) will be SUCCESSFULLY precluded from air travel on commercial aircraft in this country.

You don't like all the TSA agents in Burqas in Philadelphia?

It is almost as bad as DTW.

Yes. I read the article. I am talking about two very separate times at PIT airport. Last fall, they had a couple of days where people not flying were allowed past security (metal detectors only) to meet arriving or send off departing passengers.

The experiment was highly successful, people enjoyed the airport amenities without the usual TSA groping.

Because those experiments went so well, PIT got moved to the current stage of skipping boarding passes. The hope expressed is that we might progress from there to making the experimental arrangements last fall (a couple of times) a permanent fixture at PIT.

It would be a boon for the local economy and might even get some people flying again. Just as some of the posters on this thread have noted, the TSA cattle processing method has convinced a lot of people to give up flying.

The theory behind this isn't so far fetched. Ever been to some of the better airports in Asia such as Singapore or Tokyo Haneda? No line for the gropers when you are departing! Metal detection devices are built into the departure and arrival gates. Singapore has the added attraction of pretty uniformed ladies asking permission to wand you.

With a pacemaker, I get a pat down.

They REALLY don’t like it when I get all wiggley and go, “OOOOooooh!” during the procedure!

Who in the world is going to go the airport to go shopping? People don’t even go to malls anymore, and they can walk into malls without showing an ID. Its not 1999 anymore.

This article is NOT about letting non-boarding pass people through TSA!

Per this article you still need to be a certified passenger to get pass TSA.

In November, after Sept 11, I flew into PHL and checked into the airport Marriott. I stayed here many times when I was en route.

At the reception desk was a clerk in full, gun sight burqa. I was so pissed off at the insensitvity. It literally was just weeks after 9/11. Weeks!!

I did not check in. I called my travel agent and went to another PHL hotel.

That's PHL. I can only imagine now (I've been retired 10 years)
