Most cases are not life-threatening, which is also what makes the virus a historic challenge to contain
(big snip)
The Harvard epidemiology professor Marc Lipsitch is exacting in his diction, even for an epidemiologist. Twice in our conversation he started to say something, then paused and said, Actually, let me start again. So its striking when one of the points he wanted to get exactly right was this: I think the likely outcome is that it will ultimately not be containable.
Lipsitch predicts that, within the coming year, some 40 to 70 percent of people around the world will be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. But, he clarifies emphatically, this does not mean that all will have severe illnesses...

Sorry,I’ve had malaria, dysentery, countless alcohol poisonings and a few drug overdoses. I got over any fear of dying long ago so this whole thing just sounds stupid.
It’s real alright...In China, Korea, Japan which account for over 95% of all cases.
So far less than 40 cases in the US, most of them ethnic Chinese.
BS believe it or notit infects primarily chinese
Actually, not so, with this mean virus.
Re-infection has been deadly :(
Yep, it would take that, however, you’re assuming there are non-sick willing to do that work? The good news is summer is coming and warmer temps will make things easier and safer, it won’t slow the disease, but will ease the suffering.
I should have been born an Italian.
The grandmothers are some of the best cooks around.
Think I am some kind of Swiss or German ancestry. Never bothered to look it up. My cousin was obsessed with genealogy. I don’t remember anything spectacular from his droning.
But its just the flu. //sarcasm.
Quite the resume.
Not all at once, I take it :)
Glad you’re still here, to talk about it.

Consider the source of this; Marc Lipsitch

“Marc Lipsitch, a professor of epidemiology at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health (HSPH), and director of the schools Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics, helped lead one of the two teams that first calculated the reproductive number of SARS in the 2002-2003 outbreak.
The disease appears to be transmitting pretty effectively, probably in Korea, probably in Japan, and probably in Iran. He has estimated that 40 to 70 percent of the adult global population will eventually become infected.
That said, Infected is different from sick, he is careful to point out. Only some of those people who become infected will become sick. As noted above, only about 1 percent to 2 percent of those who have become sick thus far have died, he says. But the number of people who are infected may be far greater than the number of those who are sick. In a way, he says, thats really good news. Because if every person who had the disease was also sick, then that would imply gigantic numbers of deaths from the disease.

The DoD, HHS, and DHS should also divert major funds to that effort (removing bureaucratic deadwood would help, too).
As of today the death rate is around 3% and change.
I give you post of the day. Im part of the Ive got this group - adapt, improvise, and overcome
AIDS epidemic could, and should, have been prevented.
lol..droning :)
I learned Italian from my grandma Rose mostly.
My parents spoke it in the house but VERY rarely.
They said we were in America now and so we should only speak English.
But every time they fought it started in English but ended in Italian :)
Ah, my nephew just had my first grand nephew.
That kid will be so far removed from anything Italian that he might as well be a WASP :)
That’s fine. It’s the way things should be.
I got 2 nephews that are OBVIOUSLY of Italian descent. The rest...not so much.
And my nephew didn’t even have the Tarantella played at his wedding :(
I cried in the bathroom as I knew old age was impending.
Okkaaay. Well, I made an extra strong batch of chicken soup..
With Ghost Peppers!
Poor virus.. Won’t stand a chance!
Age is no factor in the death toll in as far as the disease it concerned. Most who enter a critical stage(25%) spend weeks, soon to be months, utilizing enhanced breathing apparatus.
Your..average recovery is over 3 weeks.
There are plenty of young unencumbered immune systems falling prey to this horrid virus.
Why symptoms in some are lessened has more to do with the exposure than the person. I understand this particular virus has absolutely no memory of itself while great in a way ,it does leave the door open for some wild swings at evolving/mutating.
So the ‘it’s just the flu” people have begun a new mantra? “It’s just old people”?
Freud would have enjoyed a moment of you all’s time.
It’s not the disease I’m worried about. It’s the likely breakdown in social order and the resulting chaos. America is a weak society, the collapse will happen fairly quickly.
“Yes. My thought exactly.
3 billion infected within this year.
It tells me this expert is insane.
No one can be that stupid.”
LOL. Get back to me in six months.
Today I read it did not come from meat market
