As Trump Barricades the Border, Legal Immigration Is Beginning to Plunge. President Trump’s border wall is beginning to rise, but a thick curtain of policy changes is more responsible for suppressing the flow of immigrants into the country.

WASHINGTON — President Trump’s immigration policies — like travel bans and visa restrictions or refugee caps and asylum changes — have begun to deliver on a longstanding goal: Legal immigration has fallen more than 11 percent and a steeper cut is looming.

While Mr. Trump highlights the construction of a border wall to stress his war on illegal immigration, it is through policy changes, not physical barriers, that his administration has been able to seal the United States. Two more measures were to take effect by Monday, an expansion of his travel ban and strict wealth tests on green card applicants.

“He’s really ticking off all the boxes. It’s kind of amazing,” said Sarah Pierce, a policy analyst with the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan research group. “In an administration that’s been perceived to be haphazard, on immigration they’ve been extremely consistent and barreling forward.”

The number of people who obtained lawful permanent residence, besides refugees who entered the United States in previous years, declined to 940,877 in the 2018 fiscal year from 1,063,289 in the 2016 fiscal year, according to an analysis of government data by the National Foundation for American Policy. Four years ago, legal immigration was at its highest level since 2006, when 1,266,129 people obtained lawful permanent residence in the United States.

Although the data provides only a glimpse of the effect of Mr. Trump’s agenda, immigration experts said it was the first sign of a decline that coming policies are most likely to exacerbate. Those include the wealth tests, which will be imposed on immigrants applying for green cards from both inside and outside the United States.

Around two-thirds of the immigrants who obtained permanent legal status from 2012 to 2016 could be blocked from doing so under the new so-called public charge rule

The wall and rules which demand emigrants to prove their value as potential citizens not welfare voters for dems are both working.

Trump is correct that legal immigrants should enter based on MERIT. Meaning they will come and work and embrace American values - seems reasonable to me.

>>> Yep. Has been changing ever since Columbus sailed the ocean blue <<<

But few came to the New World looking for a handout. They came for religious and individual liberty. This is a very different and dangerous cultural change.

This is and will be working to cull the hordes of illegals in America.

ICE ignores California laws and arrests illegal aliens at the courthouse door!

In 2018, California implemented the California Values Act, which gave special protection to illegal aliens by mandating that California law enforcement agencies cannot cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) thumbed its nose at California and arrested two people in Sonoma County Superior Court.

California has lots of reasons to hang onto its roughly 2.2 – 3.5 million illegal immigrants. They provide cheap, easily-exploited labor. They swell the state’s population, which matters for electors and congresspeople, as well as the distribution of certain federal funds. As illegal immigrants are fed into the system, they provide reliable (legal or illegal) Democrat votes. And they make Californians feel virtuous even as they allow corrupt Latin American states to continue exploiting their own citizens and destroying their economies by relying on remittances from people illegally in America.

For these reasons, California enacted the pompously named “California Values Act.” Although the act refers to “immigrants,” it’s obviously intended to affect only illegal aliens because the Act’s entire purpose is to use the agencies of the state to prevent ICE from gaining access to people illegally in California – including people who have committed crimes in California. This is the type of law that could only come from legislators and other virtue signalers ensconced in comfortable middle- and upper-middle-class enclaves unaffected by felonies that would never have happened but for open borders and sanctuaries.

Throughout the Obama administration, sanctuary cities and states were able to get away with these policies because the Obama administration, despite Obama’s sworn obligation to upload the laws of the United States, approved of open borders. Trump promised to change all that.

For those immigrants who own businesses There should be mandatory IRS visits or some form of on the scene means test for how much money these businesses are making.

I know for a fact dozens of people own businesses and report a loss year after year after year and they send their kids to college free and they drive Mercedes and they contribute $25000 a year to the church but that’s OK with all the people in the church because they don’t care how they fleece the American government or tax fair payer.

So when these people reach retirement age, many of which I know, they don’t have social security and they end up on medicaid but when they really have a problem they fly out to their home country or another place like Thailand and they get the health care they need or want if it’s unavailable for low income destitute people. Hah hah hah.

“In an administration that’s been perceived to be haphazard”

by whom? oh, yeah, that’s the entirely fake perception that the fake stream media has been trying to fabricate for over three years now ... kind of amazing that Trump has such a massive number of AMAZING accomplishments, being so haphazard and all ...

Democrats want immigrants for the political value they bring as future Democrat voters.

Republicans want immigrants for the value they can contribute to strengthening the country.

We need to go further and adopt a merit-based immigration system.

I’m by far not a student of history. But sometime back I found
the following two articles that I though was interesting about
the development of the Americas. How accurate they are I’m
not sure. You may find them an interesting read. Take care.

I’d like to see those numbers drop far more. Zero illegal immigration and deport all illegals. No exceptions. Reduce legal immigration to a trickle until our current legal immigrants have assimilated. Then limit immigration to a rate that helps America and in particular helps working Americans - without overloading our schools with too many students who do not speak English.

It was Bush/Clinton/Bush/Obama policies which were highly abnormal.

Good, as of right now 25% of our country is either foreign-born, or the children of foreign-born. Somewhere around 16% of people living here were born in another country. When one out of seven people here has such deep ties to the old country, it’s a direct threat to our culture. We are living through the ethnic cleansing of the American culture.

We need to be bringing in only those who will contribute to the country, not those who will become dependent on public aid.

I disagree. H-1B is killing our IT work force. Stop ALL immigration!!!

Do we desperately need new legal immigrants? Will the country and the economy collapse if we have fewer immigrants for 1, 5, or as long as 10 years?

But the H-1B and other “skilled” migrants don’t embrace American values unless you mean Democrat party values. Newly minted citizens vote Democrat over Republican 90%-10%.

F that. "skilled" immigrants who become citizens vote Democrat over Republican 9 to 1. Can we forgo the virtue signalling and accept reality?

It's impossible for immigration to help working Americans. That concept is laughable. It can't because the whole purpose of immigration is to increase the labor supply and reduce wages. How can that possibly help working Americans? IT CAN'T.

Good. The Dems have been plotting to replace the electorate since at least 1965. That’s when they shoved a complete up-ending of the immigration system on our nation, making it so that 90% of new immigrants would come from Turd World nations - people who did NOT share our values (for the most part - some actually do), and who would be beholden to the Dems. In reality, they have not won the white vote since 1948, and Lyndon Johnson was told by his political handlers that if something big wasn’t done fast, he’d be the last Dem President (barring big mistakes by the Republicans, like Watergate).

This is ALL about demographics and power; the Dems don’t CARE about the demographics or the country, they just want the power...and Donald J. Trump is acting on our behalf to make sure that they don’t get it. THANK YOU!!!

It’s still good to frame the immigration discussion that way. If nonzero immigration would hurt working Americans, then our immigration rate should be zero. It’s that simple.

Trump barricading the border has absolutely nothing to do with legal immigration. NY Times Asshats.
