Sen. Bernie Sanders, the frontrunner for the Democrats' presidential nomination, doubled down on his support for some of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro's policies, saying in an interview that aired Sunday, "it's unfair to simply say everything is bad."
Speaking to CBS News' "60 Minutes," Sanders, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, pointed to social welfare programs introduced under Castro's regime that he described as redeeming, despite the communist dictator's often repressive human-rights violations against Cubans.
"We're very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba but you know, it's unfair to simply say everything is bad. You know? When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it?" Sanders told Anderson Cooper.
Fidel Castro relinquished power to his brother, Raúl, in 2011; Fidel died in 2016.
Some Republicans jumped on Sanders' comments. "It really makes a difference when those you murder at the firing squad can read & write," Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, tweeted.
In a resurfaced speech given at the University of Vermont in 1986, Sanders praised the socialist policies implemented in Cuba by the Castro regime and criticized bipartisan efforts in the U.S. to tamp down on Castro's spread of communism.
While Sanders said in the new interview he "condemns" any human rights violations Castro committed, he also took aim at President Trump for his unlikely friendships with some dictators or strongman leaders, including North Korea's Kim Jong Un and Russia's Vladimir Putin
"I do not think that Kim Jong Un is a good friend," Sanders said. "I don't trade love letters with a murdering dictator. Vladimir Putin, not a great friend of mine."

Any doubt that Bernie Sanders was a sane person and not a communist psychopath has just gone down the crapper with a load of Marxist propaganda crap.
The Castro Brother plus mass torturer/murderer Che Guevara (and possible assassin of Camille Cienfuegos (Sp is off)), were responsible for the deaths of over 15,000-20,000 Cubans, many of whom supported the revolution against Batista.
Add in more victims over the decades from the deaths in the red island prisons and downtown Havana torture centers, the shooting down of the unarmed civilian leafleting plane, the killing of fleeing refugees, and the tens of thousands of deaths caused by Castro/Che in Angola, Bolivia, etc., you find a great mass murderer in the Castros, Che and their supporters.
Bernie is one of those supporters, a Munchausen by Distance killer (i.e. he supported the torture and killings in the name of a “free Cuba”).
Consider anyone who supporters him to be either one of two things, a hardcore Marxist/communist psychopath, or a brainwashed dumbassed dupe (esp. the college people) who are the equivalent of Hitler’s “Good Germans”.
This is an “either, or” scenario. If you support Bernie, you are “the enemy” of America and should be exposed for it. No crap about “voting my conscience” crap.
The German-American Bundists during WW2 were Hitler/Nazi members/supporters. PERIOD as Obama would say. No excuses for their treason and support of genocide.
Let’s treat Bernie and his Red Minions the same as we did the Bundists.

Right now it’s Bernie vs the Democrats. Let them fight it out, as they have incentive to take down Bernie, and we have incentive to let him become the nominee.
Progressives are doing a fine job of writing Trump’s campaign ads for him.

Yes that’s a terrible symptom of how poor the Cuban people.
Prostitution is rampant in Cuba as students, ordinary housewives, poor workers in jobs of all kinds, turn to prostitution to help support their families. It’s so sad that communism has had such awful effects on Cuban society.
