Daredevil and Flat Earth theorist Michael "Mad Mike" Hughes died Saturday in a rocket crash. Hughes, 64, wanted to prove the Flat Earth theory by taking photographs of the Earth from a homemade rocket.
Saturday's rocket launch was to be featured on the Science Channel, which was chronicling Hughes' attempts to launch himself high enough in a homemade rocket to take pictures of the curvature — or lack thereof as far as Hughes was concerned — of the Earth. This particular launch was only supposed to take Hughes 5,000 feet in the air, according to Discovery.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike Hughes' family and friends during this difficult time. It was always his dream to do this launch, and Science Channel was there to chronicle his journey," Science Channel said in a statement.
Although police did not positively identify Hughes, San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Public Information Officer Cindy Bachman said Saturday in a statement, "A man was pronounced deceased after the rocket crashed in the open desert during a rocket launch event. Medical aid was staged for the launch and was on scene immediately."
Hughes had previously completed a successful launch in March 2018, which sent him 1,800 feet in the air.
"The Flat Earth thing is like everything else to me," Hughes told CBS News in October 2018. "I just want people to question everything. Question what your congressman is doing, your city council. Question what really happened during the Civil War. What happened during 9/11."
At the time, Hughes stated that he built his homemade rocket mostly through, "trial and error," and admitted, "You don't get a lot of second chances, though, in the rocket business."

The Earth is an oblate spheroid. That's just a fact. There isn't some giant conspiracy trying to hide a flat Earth.

I’ve flown at 49,000 feet, in a B-52, and not seen the curvature of the earth. Might be in the 80,000 to 100,000 foot altitude.
Couldn’t go above 50,000 without pressure suits.
Decompression above 63,000 feet and not wearing a pressure suit, the blood will boil.
Mad Mike should have had somebody talk him out of the 5,000 foot climb. Mike Hughes had a death wish, for sure.
And how did you come by this knowledge?
NASA shows Earth is a perfect circle, not an oblate spheroid.
They even have "pictures from space" showing that Earth is round!

The question to ask yourself is...are you indoctrinated?
I always wonder why our Flat Earth pals never launch an expedition to The Edge.
Then they could lean over The Edge and take some pics, to show us what it looks like.
Maybe even take some ropes ‘n pitons ‘n stuff, lower themselves down and take a pic of The Bottom Side of the flat Earth.
Maybe there’s a makers mark down there, like the bottom of a cast iron skillet.

I’m guessing you live in hill country. I lived in hill or mountain country most of my life. It was only when I moved to the coast that I really noticed the curvature of the Earth (without being in an airplane). It actually took me by surprise. Even the scariest ocean waves seem smooth, compared to hills and valleys.
A simple straight-edge is all that’s required to confirm curvature. Hold it out to so that it appears to touch the horizon — the curvature is plain to see.
BTW, according to this handy calculator, at a 200’ elevation, the horizon is 17.3 miles away.

As I wasn’t using any instruments, I have no way of objectively and empirically answering that. The angle is simply too tiny to judge. You can see the geometry in this simple on-line horizon calculator. That shows I was looking down — but, the tilt was far too little to notice.

So you could mark your beginning point in the ice wall and sail in a giant circle and end up back at your starting point and it would be an ice wall all the way?

Do the Arctic and the Antartic meet? Are they connected by the Endless Circumferential Ice Wall?
What’s on the bottom side of the flat Earth? Do people live there too? Or would they fall off into space?
I just showed you that by treaty an individual can't do what you're proposing. Only a State that is a signatory of the treaty can go south of 60o South Latitude.

I’m saying it’s not possible to provide an objective answer to your question. I ‘perceived’ the horizon to be at eye level — but, that’s entirely subjective. Objectively, and in theory, I was looking down. I was a land surveyor for several years. If I had used a surveyor’s transit, I would be able to report to you the exact angles involved.
There are several locations around here, where nearby ships sailing by appear to be high above the head of observers on land. Clearly, that’s a subjective perception — whereas, objectively, the ship is below the observer. That’s why I tend to defer to instruments, in cases like this.
