Bernie Sanders possibly running against President Trump is starting to scare investors: strategist

There is a growing undercurrent in markets that say a battle this fall between self-described socialist Senator Bernie Sanders and President Donald Trump could be bad news for stock prices. As evidenced by the market’s strong run-up in 2020, investors have yet to exit stocks on fears of a big government Bernie winning the Oval Office. But his continued strong showing in debates and national polls may lead to some profit-taking sooner rather than later. The concern - Sanders shocks the market-friendly Trump.

“There is definitely kind of fear [among clients] if you get a candidate like Sanders or say Elizabeth Warren,” said UBS global investment strategist Jason Draho on Yahoo Finance’s The First Trade. For now, the Sanders surge is keeping a lid on the market potential argues Draho. “It’s more of a headwind that keeps markets from rising higher,” Draho noted.

Sanders is viewed by most rainmakers on Wall Street as anti-big business, anti-stock market and anti-wealth creation. In other words, bad for risk-taking in numerous asset classes, save for perhaps gold and bitcoin.

“I’m confused. Bernie is the preferred choice to run against Trump by conservatives. Why is that?”

Because hard-leftists, who are open about it, don’t do well against conservatives, as evidenced by the following:

1 - Jermey Corbin (UK)
2 - Walter Mondole
3 - Michael Foote (UK)
4 - George McGovern

They only win when they mask their hard-left positions.

“Any of the candidates would likely be beaten by Trump, but if it’s Bernie, it is expected by many republicans that turnout for the democrats will be low enough that the republicans stand a good chance of taking back the house.”

Perhaps, but look at an alternate outcome. If the Dems deny Bernie being top-of-the-ticket, what happens to his supporters? As far as I can see, even a bigger blowout.

They have no rational choice. The damage done to the party by a Sanders run would be epic, and would be felt in for years or even decades to come. There are *still* a lot of sane Democrat voters. They are old school Democrats. They don't like a lot of the policies held by the Democrats, but they despise the Republican party more than they dislike Democrat policies. They have been leaving the party in drips and drabs for the last 30 years. A Sanders run would be the final straw.

What is more, the other big powerful groups within the party (the feminist wing -- the most politically savvy and entrenched group; blacks -- already divided generationally and by gender) are never going to tolerate the Sanders wing being anything other than a source of obedient votes.

They have no choice other than to bite the bullet. Deny Sanders the nomination. Say goodbye to 25% of their voters (with the hope that some trickle back). Put up some kind of moderate loser (a graceful, integrity-filled candidate like Mondale would be the perfect dedicated loser). Make up whatever excuse they need to. And start trying to undo *some* of the damage they have done to their party over the last 4 years.

But with Sanders leading the pack, it’s no longer winning the top job, it’s down-ballot. If they kick Sanders off, they lose, since his voters will be gone with him. If they leave him on, they lose, because of the people you identify as not wanting to live in a Communist country (with my parents being two of them).

But down-ballot, my parents will still vote if Sanders is on the ticket, they just won’t vote for him. They’ll pull D’s the rest of the way. But if Sanders supporters are pissed because the Democrat Party screwed him out of the nomination, then they don’t vote down-ballot - maybe just stay home (since their anger will be at the party).

EXACTLY the same happened in 2016. Paul Ryan was set to steal the nomination from Trump at the Convention, in order to prevent a Hillary victory - but then down-ballot Republicans heard from us that they too would be punished if that happened, and Ryan pulled back, and allowed Trump to lose in a landslide (LOL), while protecting down-ballot candidates.

I thought the stalled market was all about The Virus.

That was last week. Of course that was Trumps fault too.

I tend to agree with you. On the other hand, had just 39,000 votes (total) flipped strategically in the three states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, Hillary would have become president. Now, I am not saying the Hillary voters are Sanders voters. I am saying that I wouldn’t get too overconfident either. Maybe the investors are thinking the same thing.

Barack Obama hid who he was. Before he was elected POTUS he could be what ever you thought of him. His edge was not taking a stand on anything thereby allowing people to believe he was anything they wanted him to be.
Besides he ran against McCain and Romney. Geez that says it all by itself.

I suspect you have no grasp on how many people were apprehensive about Trump and didn’t vote for him in 2016 but can’t wait to vote for him in 2020.

Stop falling for the lies. The average man knows exactly how good things are going and the reason why.

Trump landslide in 2020.

You nailed it. The entire issue here is how we came to have even this many people voting for Bernie. THAT is the real danger in this country. It can NOT tolerate a people who would vote for someone like Obama or Bernie. We have a problem far worse than the symptoms shown by voting for Godless men like that.

At some point fairly soon, the Democrats will realize that they have no way to beat Trump (barring some kind of black swan), and that, no matter what they do, their hold on the house will be in jeopardy. Your parents may still vote Democrat, but others won’t. Listen to the CSPAN callers after Pelosi tore up Trump’s speech. These voters are *done* with the Democrats. But a Sander’s campaign would be a daily tearing-of-the-speech. Some may stay Democrat. But some won’t. And that is the Democrat’s problem.

The bigger problem though is that the Democratic party is made up of rival fiefdoms. These fiefdoms are vicious and ruthless. Sanders (actually, his supporters), are interlopers. The Democratic power bases cannot tolerate a new, out-of-control, group to upset their delicate balance.

There is no parallel between the Republicans and Democrats here. The dynamics are just completely different. To survive, the Democrats need the Sanders voters to either shut up and do what they are told, or to go away permanently. The former is out of the question, so the Democrats have no choice but to force them out.

For the Democrats, this is no longer about winning the 2020 election. This is about surviving as a major party. They can do so, if they rid themselves of Sanders voters. But they simply cannot, if they don’t.

Bernie is my preferred choice to “almost” get the nomination.

I want it stolen from him at the last second by the DNC—so the party of evil goes up in flames for a generation.///

Nice being in a win win situation- Bernie or flames. lol

It's worth reading the comments sections on MSM articles to see what people outside of FR are thinking.

And it is not just the sheer hatred. It also is echoing of flat out falsehoods that they are fed nonstop from the media.

Just this morning I was seeing posts about Russia, Russia, Russia! They hadn't heard (or comprehended) that the Russia thing was intending to help Bernie and not Trump.

Unless, I guess, they know that by helping Bernie they are actually helping Trump. But from the comments I don't think they are thinking that far ahead.

But you have a point. Outside of the echo chamber of Free Republic it is a very different world with very different rules and "truths."

[Bernie is the preferred choice to run against Trump by conservatives. Why is that?]

Because a Democrat Socialist kook like Bernie exposes the insanity of the Democratic Party on a national level and taints them, severely, for the foreseeable future.

Bernie is too angry, too radical and too kooky.

The Democrat Establishment know this and are trying to take him down. Looks like Bernie crushed the other Democrats in Nevada.

Now, all that being said, it’s a sad day that there are that many fools that believe in him. But I’d say the same thing about anyone supporting any of the Democrats, too.

The Democrats created their own monster. AOC is another fine example. Too bad the public feud between her and Nancy Pelosi was quelled. It was quite entertaining.

[ This country is radically different from the country that elected Ronald Reagan. ]

That’s correct.

The Leftist fools fell for the lies of Barack and Her Thighness. That a show like “The View” is still on and there are actually idiots that think it provides “intelligent discussion” on political topics. I’ve seen their comments.

Huffington Post people, no doubt.

I don't think he would have to. I think the bolshevik can be bought to take a dive for a mere million.

We've already established what he is, now we're just haggling over price.

Best of all outcomes from for us, IMO. A large portion of Dems will be sour to the establishment and will stay home on election day. And those people will finally understand that they do not have a party.
