Trump Administration Plans to Raise Seasonal-Worker Cap
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 20 Feb 2020 | Michelle Hackman

Posted on 02/21/2020 12:38:49 PM PST by Theoria

The Trump administration plans to allow 45,000 additional seasonal guest workers to return to the U.S. this summer, the highest number since the president took office, according to three administration officials.

The Department of Homeland Security plans to announce the additional seasonal-worker visas next week, an administration official said. They will become available in two waves: the first 20,000 will be immediately available, while employers can apply for the remainder for jobs beginning June 1.

It wasn’t clear whether the White House has fully signed off on the numbers, and an administration official cautioned they could change.

The additional visas are being made available ahead of the summer, when demand for short-term work is typically highest.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf “has made no decision yet on the issue,” a DHS spokesperson said. “Any numbers reported on at this time are being pushed to press by junior staff who are not privy to all of the discussions taking place.”

The seasonal worker program, known as the H-2B visa program, enables U.S. employers to hire as many as 66,000 foreign workers a year, with the allotments split evenly between the winter and summer seasons. Congress permits the Department of Homeland Security each year to raise that cap by as many as 64,000 additional visas.

In Mr. Trump’s first two years in office, DHS raised the cap by 15,000 visas to 81,000, and last year it raised the cap by 30,000 to 96,000.

The market wage for any job is the wage that gets it filled - Econ 101.

Further....... the legislated minimum wage may in some areas be=< what most are actually earning

The point remains that for the market wage, some Americans will want to do those jobs; suppressing that wage with foreigners is anti-American.

In several of the jobs (that pay minimum wage + 70 cents) they can’t get native born workers to take the jobs.

Then that's below the market wage for those jobs.

They can’t pay more per hour due to some law (maybe Federal)

If so, then that's what needs to change - not the number of work visas.

A bar/restaurant in a Maine coastal town use seasonal workers from Eastern Europe. My son asked about and the owner told him, “The locals would rather stay home than work”.

Including many, many college students who ought to be able to get summer jobs.

The college students I've encountered in my lifetime aren't interested in plant production work let alone cutting grass and all the other stuff I mentioned. Those jobs are available if they want them so why aren't they taking them?

Work for the wage he was offering, that is. Many employers seem to feel entitled to cheap labor; they're really not too different than the free-s*** gimmedats.

Because employers offer low wages and poor working conditions to illegals.

Because the market wage is not being offered.

I was writing about college work/study jobs.

Had some folks do outdoor work for me a few years ago - paid well and provided lunch. One guy was on the phone constantly. Told him put the phone away or leave when work breaks for lunch. He left at lunch break. I think there are some very hard workers out there - but it's a challenge to find good workers for odd jobs.

Not the college students I’ve taught. There are plenty who would be up for it.

You may have taught them but my Tier I auto stamping company tried to hire them. The only ones who actually applied were the sons and daughters of the uneducated long time production workers whose kids were entering into college or in college and needed jobs for the summer. We're talking inner city Detroit..........

None of your elitist kids would ever give a thought about working at my plant......

“There simply aren’t enough American workers willing to do labor.”

There would be many more if helicopter mommy didn’t take care of all their needs until their 40’s

You mean the wage the privileged workers demand?.....LOL!

It don't work that way bro, only in a union environment........

Do you or your kid need income or not? That's a very simple question and if yes, then the job is available to you. If no, then you have no argument........

I’m ok with that, they’re here legally and that’s all that matters......
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Please think that a statement through a little.

There are too many of every type of Visas being issued already. The work Visas are especially harmful.

The employers pay low wages, while denying American legals job experience when young and
supplementary income when older.

Trump better get this issue straight or he will answer for it as soon as 2020. The policy is destructive.

Because the market wage is not being offered.

Who determines the market wage anyway? You? So you are calling for a mandatory working wage as determined by what you deem is necessary to live. Am I right?

We're getting close here so what is the mandatory wage you are demanding that would entice the lazy kids in this country to accept the jobs that the foreign season workers are taking?

I haven’t taught elitist college students and there is no reason such students should want that kind of job if they’ve got cushy internships lined up.

The wage that persuades an American to show up and do the job - that's how the labor market works, whine about "privilege" and "demands" as you will. Any employer who thinks they have a right to undercut American wages with foreign workers is the one demanding a privilege - to which American patriots say NO!

Who exactly are the seasonal employees and what do they do? You know damn well who they are and you know why your kid or any other person doesn't want to do that manual labor..They're too lazy!
