A recent study found conservative students self-censor their opinions three times as much as their liberal peers, shedding a light on a free speech issue conservative youth are facing in one of the top universities in American South.
The study was conducted by three professors at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. In spring 2019, they invited all UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduates to complete an email questionnaire, followed by in-depth focus group interviews with members from three politically active student organizations. Some 1,200 of more than 20,000 undergraduate students completed the survey.
The respondents said, according to the findings, the majority of their UNC professors do try to discuss both sides of political issues and encourage opinions from across the political spectrum when politics come up in class. Students were also found to desire more opportunities for constructive dialogue with peers who do not share their political ideas.
More alarmingly, however, the researchers found that the current campus does not consistently promote free expression and constructive cross-spectrum political dialogue. Many students also worry that if they express their sincere political views openly, instructors and/or peers will think less of them, or do something to embarrass them, the report states. Some students even worry their course grades might be affected.
The report says that almost 68 percent of conservative students report that they have kept a political opinion to themselves at least once, comparing to roughly 49 percent of moderates and 24 percent of liberals who have experienced the same self-censorship in the classroom. While 75 percent of conservatives report worrying about disapproval from fellow students, only 26 percent of liberals have the same concern.

And ten times more likely to need to self censor.
Ping.
There needs to be a requirement that the faculty of these universities
approach equilibrium when it comes to political party affiliation.
Why should the taxpayers have to fund programs intended to destroy this
nation? Why should tuition paying students have to?
Because liberals/progressives professors will punish them.
I hope every conservative who self-censors, or is censored, responds to their school’s very first post-graduation fundraising letter with an explanation why the school will never get a penny beyond the tuition already paid, and a suggestion that the school collect all those alumni donations from their leftist classmates. Might have a positive impact.
Color me shocked...that ANY conservative ANYWHERE expresses a conservative opinion.
Duh
Not much of a choice. They will either be failed by their NAZI professors, or beaten by the NAZI professors brainwashed Brownshirts. Only way to stop this is to hold professors liable for the content they are hired to teach, by sueing the living hell out of these lineal professors personally, and hold the collages responsible as well. I dont understand why this is not done? How are they legally protected from the lives they have destroyed?
They aren’t helpless. While they are lying low, they can study hard, donate to groups that are fighting campus Marxism, and marry well. Their time will come.
Intimidation and negative consequences aside, conservatives are more likely to have self discipline and a sense of responsibility for their own actions. At least a part of self censorship has to do with that type of self reflection that leftists have little grasp of.
Many times...I just quit trying to "teach"...Most aren't capable of actually learning what is actually going on.
This study could have been titled: Yes, Conservatives can be successfully silenced.
Everyone knows arrogant leftists won’t keep their damn mouths shut.
Because in the “pursuit of taking the high ground” they have been brainwashed into being PC even without knowing it has occurred.
