Iran Reports 3 New Cases Of Coronavirus After 2 Deaths In Same City

Iran said on February 20 that three more people have tested positive for a new coronavirus in the holy Shi'ite city of Qom, where two people the previous day had died of the illness caused by the virus.

The IRNA state news agency reported that all schools and universities, including religious Shi’ite seminaries, were closed in the holy Iranian city, located about 140 kilometers south of the capital, Tehran.

Amid fears of the virus spreading, neighboring Iraq banned border crossings by Iranian nationals after already suspending flights to Iran.

The country’s Health Ministry said the same day that there were five confirmed cases of what the World Health Organization (WHO) has named the COVID-19 virus, which first emerged in China's central Hubei Province in December.

The two elderly Iranians who died on February 19 were included in the number.

Iranian Deputy Health Minister Mohammad Mahdi said those infected with the illness didn’t appear to have had any contact with Chinese nationals.

Authorities are currently investigating how the five individuals could have contracted the virus and its possible link with religious pilgrims visiting from outside the country.

Sixty Iranian students who had recently been evacuated from China and quarantined were discharged after 14 days without any health problems.

More than 75,000 people worldwide have been infected with the virus, with over 2,000 deaths being reported. The vast majority of cases have occurred in China.

Also that there are infected people in Rasht, Tehran & Arak.

Before believing that to be true, would want independent confirmatory testing that it was actually COVID 19 that infected and killed those people. Does Iran have the capability to perform an accurate diagnostic test?

They have been allowing Chinese to enter the country this whole time.

Currently most hospitals are equipped to do serological testing on specimens to diagnose at least three different types of the coronavirus but not Covid 19. Before the report out of Iran is taken as true, independent reliable testing specific for COVID 19 must be performed on the specimens they tested. Suspect that they did detect a coronavirus in these patients but few American hospitals currently have reliable means to make the definitive test. Somehow doubt the hard pressed Iranians have the means to diagnose COVID 19 accurately in a regional hospital.

All of the tests are being sent to the Pasteur Institute in Tehran.

That being said, the Health Minister is saying that the tests will only be done on people with serious symptoms, but it’s expensive

Please take not of the drop in reports of new cases. It is Mainland China
related, and is making these questionable numbers from the start, look
even worse.

In the last day or so the leadership of China stated they have done a
a lot of work to end COVID-19, and local Wuhan leaders would be held
responsible for reports of new cases.
