The Vegan Society said that vegans should be given their own shelf in refrigerators at work and employers should 'protect them' from offensive jokes about their dietary choices.
The document was written following a judge in an employment tribunal declaring last month that ethical veganism is a philosophical belief, like a religion, which should be protected against discrimination by workplace law.
The Vegan Societys document recommends that staff requiring a uniform or special equipment, such as leather safety boots, should be offered non-animal alternatives. It also says that vegans should have their own isolated shelf in the work refrigerator above non-vegan foods so that their food does not have to touch meat or other animal products like milk or cheese.
The original case sparking the guidance revolved around ethical veganism, a more extreme form of the lifestyle, and whether Jordi Casamitjana was fired from his job over his ethical veganism.
Judge Robin Postle had said: I am satisfied overwhelmingly that ethical veganism does constitute a philosophical belief.
While the full case is still to be heard this month, Casamitjanas lawyer said that the judge declaring veganism a philosophy equal to protection under the law like other protected characteristics such as race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation, will have a potentially significant impact in the workplace, including what jokes are considered hateful.
Lawyer Peter Daly had said that comments directed towards vegans choice of eating habits might be seen to be harassment in the same way a racist or sexist slur might be discriminatory action.
On this, the Vegan Society guidance recommends that it is the employers responsibility to foster a safe environment and positive atmosphere for vegans in the workplace and to intervene over jokes about veganism.

Keep your dietary choices to yourself, if you possibly can, and people won’t make fun of them.
So, no cartoons on the fridge, then?
One might be tempted to egg them on with yolks about veganism.
There is a Plant City in central FL, but unfortunately the name is inaccurate, the bulk of the population is made up of omnivores.
Vegans demand segregation
Put your vegan lunch in a container so it won’t touch my meat
It is another religion
And as for their special shelf I'd make it a point to let them know...regularly...that the juices from my ground beef dripped onto their shelf.
If they had a little more meat in their diet, they might not be so sensitive.
I’ve read that cattle is a huge industry in Florida.
I’d first dump the fridge out the back door.
A philosophical belief has many things in common with religious beliefs, but is not the same thing.
Else sexism and racism would have to be protected beliefs in the workplace - as could a belief that if it is funny you must share it.
Aside from pork, and certain fish/crustaceans, I eat vegans.
During bad weather I get my exercise by walking at a mall near me. There are others who do the same and, over time, you get to know them. There's one woman that I often see who's somewhere between 50 and 100 years old.To look at her you just *know* she's a vegetarian/vegan (the mall's a rather "upscale" one in an affluent area) and I swear she looks like she was just set free from Dachau. She looks like walking death.
How would someone know they are vegan?
That right, wait 30 seconds, they’ll tell you.
It starts with demands for their own shelf.
Next will come a demand for their own fridge.
Then their own table.
Then their own break room.........
Yet another protected class? Who do these judges think they are? Everything that made America great must now be sacrificed to protect one or another weirdo? With all due respect, your honor, go pound sand.
Exactly! I can’t hardly stand it when these people talk about their food choices....worse when you go to there homes for dinner!

Orcas are even more spiritually evolved than humans and they only eat seal meat. So that means humans should only eat meat ...
