After what was thought to be a simple case of the flu, 8-year-old Kinsley Sandvik died on Valentine’s Day. (Courtesy Shannon Sandvik)

For one family in Calvert County, Maryland, Valentine’s Day will always be connected to heartbreak: the day when they lost their 8-year-old girl.

Kinsley Sandvik had a vibrant laugh and, according to her mother, everyone was her friend.

“If you met her, you fell in love with her. No one was a stranger to this child, not even the pizza man,” said mom Shannon Sandvik. “I’d say, ‘Don’t talk to strangers,’ and she’d say, ‘I’m not,’ and I’d say, ‘OK, well, what’s his name?’ And she’d say, ‘The Pizza Man.’”

Shannon Sandvik said her daughter was an amazing athlete, playing on a travel soccer team three or four days a week. The young girl was the life of the party and a ball of energy. She was never sick — until this month.

On Thursday, Feb. 6, Kinsley Sandvik wasn’t feeling well. So, her mom took her to the pediatrician.

Death of a child is important.

You either intentionally on unintentionally missed my point. What makes this one different from the 200 or so other kids in that age bracket that die every day?

My wife and I have never had one. I’ve not gotten the flu in decades. My wife got it three years ago. It was a very hard four weeks. My brother got it at around the same time in Seattle (we’re in Kentucky). He had a flu shot. He also went to the hospital because of the seriousness (it was the same as my wife’s).

His lasted six weeks.

My wife and I trust the Lord with healing and He has been faithful.

I read the article, and I still don't know. What kind of flu moves this fast? Weaponized flu? Ebola?

That's what's so scary. The powers-that-be are deliberately keeping things hush-hush.

I read another story the other day which said that the Coronavirus is mutating:

‘Striking’ coronavirus mutations found within one family cluster, Chinese scientists say

If it was the flu then the headline is a lie.

I read the article, and it appears that she died from a secondary infection brought on by her immune system being weakened by the flu. Since I didn't see in the article any mention of whether or not she got a flu shot I can't see the point of this article. Is the point of the article that people should get a flu shot? If it is, then the author didn't do a very good job of making his point. As I posted earlier approximately 200 kids age 5-9 die in the USA every day. Still not sure why this is newsworthy.

She had never been sick before and her immune system couldn’t handle it.

One tries to not become so hardened under the barrage of appeals to emotion that you feel nothing.

Got the flu decades ago when I was full of vim and vigor. Laid low for a solid week. Aching muscles, the whole ball of wax. If I got it today, I’d probably end up in the ER.

Awww, jeez. This ought to be a cautionary tale for parents. I know there are people out there for whom flu shots are contraindicated, but those folks are just another reason to get the shot if your doc recommends it.

Yep.

Influenza virus targets the cells that line the respiratory tract.

As those cells die or become disabled, the lungs become an hospitable environment for bacteria, most deaths after influenza are caused by secondary bacterial infections which enter through the respiratory tract and cause pneumonia, septicemia, and sometimes death.

Literally, half of my staff who received the forced flu vax still got the flu, confirmed by diagnostics.

Flu Complications

Most people who get flu will recover in a few days to less than two weeks, but some people will develop complications (such as pneumonia) as a result of flu, some of which can be life-threatening and result in death.

Sinus and ear infections are examples of moderate complications from flu, while pneumonia is a serious flu complication that can result from either influenza virus infection alone or from co-infection of flu virus and bacteria. Other possible serious complications triggered by flu can include inflammation of the heart (myocarditis), brain (encephalitis) or muscle (myositis, rhabdomyolysis) tissues, and multi-organ failure (for example, respiratory and kidney failure). Flu virus infection of the respiratory tract can trigger an extreme inflammatory response in the body and can lead to sepsis, the body’s life-threatening response to infection. Flu also can make chronic medical problems worse. For example, people with asthma may experience asthma attacks while they have flu, and people with chronic heart disease may experience a worsening of this condition triggered by flu.

I am sorry she died, too young of course.

However, I don’t see the point of the article except to report a disaster and grab headlines and tug at our hearts. Fair enough I guess.

Furthermore, this is another artifact of the 24/7 news cycle to find something dramatic to report on and if not dramatic enough, make it that way. It is the preoccupation of journalism these days when they are not pushing the left and bashing the right.

I’m struggling to get excited about the flu. Perhaps since I have been fortunate not to have had it in what seems like decades and no, I don’t get the shot and yes I was out in the public every day up until about three years ago. Growing up we all had the flu. Sometimes every year. I remember being miserable especially if it went to what we called stomach flu but we seldom if ever heard of deaths. Have the strains of flu become more severe than they were 30 or 40 years ago? Is the excitement more about selling flu shots? I see several local schools have shut down in the last few weeks because of flu, this was common years ago, leading me to suppose that the current strain infecting kids is not one for which a vaccine was created this year.

At best the CDC shows the flu shot is typically 40 to 60 percent effective. A few years back, they guessed wrong, and the shot was 7% effective.
Too many people act like if you get the shot you cannot get the flu.

The majority of the population is low in blood levels of vitamin D. Best way to avoid complications from flu is to keep one’s blood levels of vitamin D up. It is criminal that this blood test is not standard for every single person on an annual basis. And vitamin D has the added benefit of anti-cancer effects.

The flu shot is ineffective, and is known to make one more susceptible to non-flu illnesses.

I’ve personally taken IV therapy for serious illness and can attest to its effectiveness.

That’s what can happen with influenza. It doesn’t have to be “weaponized”. Nature did that without any human intervention.
