Trump Offered Assange Pardon if He Covered Up Russian Hack, WikiLeaks Founder’s Lawyer Claims
The Daily Beast ^ | February 19, 2020 | Nico Hines

LONDON—A lawyer for Julian Assange has claimed in court that President Trump offered to pardon Assange if the WikiLeaks founder agreed to help cover up Russia’s involvement in hacking emails from the Democratic National Committee.

Assange’s lawyers said on Wednesday that former Republican congressman Dana Rohrabacher offered Assange the deal in 2017, a year after emails that damaged Hillary Clinton in the presidential race had been published. WikiLeaks posted the stolen DNC emails after they were hacked by Russian operatives.

The claim that Rohrabacher acted as an emissary for the White House came during a pre-extradition hearing in London.

Assange has argued that he should not be extradited to the U.S. because the American case against him is politically motivated. He spent almost seven years hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy in Central London claiming that he would be jailed in the U.S. if he wasn’t granted asylum. He was kicked out of the embassy last year.

His lawyers told the court that Trump’s alleged offer to pardon Assange proved that this was no ordinary criminal investigation.

Edward Fitzgerald, who was representing Assange in court, said he had evidence that a quid pro quo was put to Assange by Rohrabacher, who was known as Putin’s favorite congressman.

Bullshit. An obvious concoction released amid POTUS’ spate of clemency orders.

“after they were hacked by Russian operatives.”

That’s proven, right?? Of course it was not.

The headline doesn’t match the text of the story. The “Trump offered pardon” part was a claim by Assange’s lawyer, but the whole story was that Dana Rohrbacher supposedly floated the idea, but there was no actual involvement by Trump, nor a description of what Assange’s quid pro quo would actually entail (probably it’s a reference to getting an admission from Assange that Seth Rich was the DNC leaker), nor even a rebuttal or “no comment” from Rohrbacher, at least not one that I saw.

Assange needs a new mouthpiece. I understand Avenatti’s available.

Assange has always been a dirt bag. This doesn’t surprise me at all.

Assange: "Sure I'll say it because they didn't have anything to do with it"

This is all smoke to divert attention from the criminality and corruption revealed in the emails.

There is no evidence that Russia hacked these emails.

“Mr Rohrabacher going to see Mr Assange and saying, on instructions from the president, he was offering a pardon or some other way out, if Mr Assange... said Russia had nothing to do with the DNC leaks.””

Assange basically said this on Hannity. I see nothing wrong with rewarding him for telling the truth. Hell, it is basically a precondition for anyone else who wants clemency or a pardon.

The Headline implies that Assange accepts the premise that a Russian hack was involved. What his lawyer said was that, if Assange could produce evidence that it was not a Russian hack, his legal troubles would go away. The premise of the offer was that there had not been Russian involvement, and that Assange could confirm that. The underlying question is: were the Russians involved or not? It remains central, and unresolved.

So let me get this straight ... Assange has previously stated that the Russians didn’t send him any of the DNC material that was posted on Wikileaks, but now his lawyer is claiming Trump wanted his help to cover up the Russian hack? This makes no sense.

This guy also sounds like the dumbest lawyer on the planet, because the DOJ now has to prosecute his client to the fullest extent of the law even if Trump wants to go easy on him.
