the only thing that would slow down the ice melting was if economies across the world began de-carbonising themselves

That settles it, all Journalists shall report for immediate de carbonising to save the planet.

That says it all, it really does. What gets me is they’ll say a 1 degree rise in the average temp over the past 100 years is wiping out a species of animals or plants.

Well wait a minute, then how do these animals or plants survive the seasonal changes in temperature? Here in New York for example you can expect a 100 degree temperature change from the seasons, from 100 degrees in summer to zero in winter. Yet a ONE degree change in average temperature is causing “mass extinction” to quote Greta?

What would plants eat?

Well, exactly. (Most) plants evolved when the athmosphere had 1000 ppm of CO2.

This is why CO2 is injected into commercial greenhouses, and its also why plants do better when you talk to them (because your exhaled breath literally = plant food)

We are currently at ~410 ppm CO2. Plants have been literally starving for millions of years - it's debatably only the advent of mankind that has brought plants back from the edge of extinction.

We are - absolutely literally - greening the earth with our CO2 emissions.

"Ice-free Antarctica? I fail to see the downside..." "The oceans would rise hundreds of feet if all of the ice over land melted." I know, right, my glass of water-with-ice always overflows the glass every time the ice melts..... off

Plants evolved? From what?Interesting point about that talking to plants thing. Never thought about that. It makes sense.

Wait. Removing all the carbon would only slow the process? To what? How much time would that buy us?

I doubt it but if true it will be wonderful to see what is beneath all that ice. Plus, it would open a massive amount land and resources for everybody. Imagine the potential.

Wait a minute. If that ice is resting on the seabed, most of the water has been already been displaced, has it not? So, melting wouldn’t change anything.

Plants evolved from progressively more primitive plants, all the way back to cyanobacteria.

That’s the screamingly elegant way in which God created plants.

(Our 19th century forebears erroneously supposed that the facts of evolution must be atheistic: but - they simply are not).

Oh, and we're going to need more money. Juuuuust to be sure. Because, you know, this climate science stuff can get expensive. There's charts and graphs and studies and fact-finding junkets to Malta and any other number of variables. And that stuff doesn't just grow on trees.

IIRC in the Jurassic period, Antarctica wasn’t at the pole.

Which meant that it was getting much more effective sunlight (insolation) - which meant in turn that the world was being heated by much more land area under sunlight.

We are only in an ice age now because Antarctica is where it is.

Once Antarctica moves way from the pole and back into the sunlight, the ice will all melt - and we can explore all the cities left by the Elder Things.
