Summertime Blues for the Olympics

Although we are currently in the dead of winter, summer will be here before we know it. Democrats may be singing the Summertime Blues along with Eddie Cochran, “I'm gonna raise a fuss, I'm gonna raise a holler” when they are forced to nominate a socialist to represent their party in the upcoming presidential election. Or alternatively alienate half of their base.

There will also be a bit of fussing and hollering over the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Assuming the coronavirus outbreak doesn’t turn into a science fiction movie leading to a near extinction event, gender politics and intersectionality are likely to provide a healthy dose of dyspepsia for Olympic committees and organizers.

As a preview of coming summertime gender wars, a biological male was invited to the US Olympic track and field trials to compete against American women. As reported by the Daily Caller,

Other than Michael Phelps, I couldn’t even tell you the name of a single competitor in the Summer Olympics in the last 25 years. And I only know his name because of some articles posted here on FR in the last few years that had nothing to do with the Olympics. Wasn’t he arrested for something?

With all the so called “trans genders” competing, and all the protests planned, there’s no was in Hades that I’ll watch (or follow) a single minute of the Olympics.

Does anyone remember Jim Carrey doing a female gymnast?

Men competing in women's sports is a bite that all of the cool kids will be unable to swallow.

The Olympic word of the day is STUPID.

I’m in the same boat. I remember Jim McKay, and Olga Korbut in 1972, and the big Russian weitlifter, and Mark Spitz, and Nadia and the US hockey team, and lots of other stuff. In the midst of the Cold War, the Olympics were a pleasant jingoistic diversion to root for our country and say that we were better than the commies.

As soon as that aspect of it went away I lost interest. The reporting went downhill rapidly and seemed to be about sob stories more than anything else. Who cares?

It’s all about the television coverage. The dirty little secret is that Olympic TV coverage is aimed at audiences of women and minorities.

Why do you think figure skating generates the highest TV ratings of any Olympic event? No normal man who is a sports fan gives a crap about it.

One big plus is the hosts. The Japanese have a lot lower tolerance for this sort of $#*+ than most first world countries.

They may be powerless to prevent trannies from competition as that issue is decided by the IOC.

But they don't take kindly to unruly street protests.

Yes, marijuana possession. He has since cleaned up his life, got married, and has a kid.

And not everyone is a idiot. Remember at London in 2012, when Usain Bolt of Jamaica was in the middle of an interview on the field, and an American was getting their gold medal? As soon as the Anthem was played, he stopped the interview without another word, turned away from the reporter, and stood silent as the US Anthem played. After the ceremony, he continued. I remember things like that.

Yeah, there’s probably going to be a hell of a lot more controversies this go round. Transgenders, doping, and the plethora of political infighting that always seems to accompany an Olympics...we’ll probably have more of that this time. I’ll probably give it another shot for Tokyo, and I’ll see if it’s worth it anymore.

That being said...it’s always, and I mean ALWAYS a neat thing to hear The National Anthem played as an American stands atop the podium. That’s why I watch.

I’m not suggesting they’re idiots at all. My point is that the Olympics aren’t the same since they’re now basically owned by TV interests. That’s why I only know about the athletes who make news outside the sports media.

I even forgot the Olympics were in London in 2012. For some reason I thought they hosted the 2016 Olympics. LOL.

The Olympics were much better during the Cold War when we rooted against the Commies.

I hope the Japanese have that guy that competed in the Men’s team Gymnastics with a broken leg and still stuck his landing to help Japan win the Gold, light the flame.

Still remember fondly the Opening Ceremony in Nagano when the hosts had sumo greats pair off with adorable little kids to march in together before the children did the opening ceremonial dance.

They asked one of the big sumo greats if he wasn't cold marching in with traditional sumo garb. His sardonic answer was so classical Japanese: "Two minutes of cold; one lifetime of fond memory."

I noticed now that Mongolians are dominating Sumo, so it’s not even all that Japanese anymore.

When I lived in Hawaii as a kid, I would always watch the Sumo matches on the Japanese TV station there.

They were much bette when they were just the Olympics, and not the NBC-CBS-ABC-Comcast Olympics.

1980 in Lake Placid might have been the last of the great Olympics. It’s hard to believe today that the “Miracle on Ice” game was shown on TV on tape-delay because the IOC wouldn’t reschedule the game from 5PM to 8PM for ABC.

There’s way too many events now.

I would cut it back to the events of the 76 Olympics. That seemed to be the perfect amount of events.

The only thing memorable about the 2012 London games was the Queen and 007 film bit for the opening and her double parachuting down to the stadium. The rest of the opening ceremonies was a homage to the government run National Health Service. While I probably should have I don’t think I watched a minute of the Rio games. Tokyo is looking the same although like this essay says the coronavirus is a wild card. The Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix for
April 19 was postponed last week. Interesting times.
