Green light for red flag bill (Goes to NM Dem Gov. for signing)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | February 13, 2020 | Dan McKay

SANTA FE – New Mexico lawmakers pushed weeks of tearful debate to a close late Thursday with passage of a red flag gun law – the final approval necessary to send the bill to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.

The state House passed the proposal 39-31 after about three hours of debate, putting New Mexico on track to become the 18th state in the nation with such a law.

The legislation, Senate Bill 5, would allow for the court-ordered seizure of guns from individuals deemed an imminent danger to themselves or others. It would establish an Extreme Risk Firearm Protection Order Act.

Intensely personal stories surfaced as lawmakers debated the bill.

Choked with emotion, Democratic Rep. Antonio “Moe” Maestas of Albuquerque told his colleagues about trying to keep a cousin from killing herself. Police found Celena Alarid dead in mid-December. “We pleaded with her to give us the handgun,” Maestas said. “We could not get the handgun out of her possession. We had no legal remedy.”

Republican lawmakers, in turn, raised the prospect of deadly confrontations between families and police officers who show up to seize firearms. “I’m just afraid we’re going to have a dead police officer or a dead mom or dad who feel like their rights were infringed on,” said Rep. James Strickler, R-Farmington.

The gun bill is at the center of perhaps the most emotionally charged debate of the 2020 session.

All 24 Republicans in the House voted against the bill. They held up copies of the state Constitution as they cast their votes against the bill. They were joined by seven Democrats who opposed it Thursday ...

The governor said she will sign the legislation. It would go into effect 90 days after the Legislature’s adjournment Thursday next week.

Last year the Dems passed a no private gun sales law without a Federal background check. This year it's a Red Flag law. Unless we get a few more Republican's in the legislature this fall, there will be more anti-gun legislation that will make NM look like Virginia.

and once these bills get passed- they will never be repealed because the left and the msm will crucify anyone that tries- and scream that those that try ‘don’t care about people’s lives’

Meanwhile bloomberg wants to disarm black people and the left embrace him and couldn’t care less that his views are racist

Far more people die from cars per year than guns. I wonder how those who want this bill to pass would feel if their car got confiscated because I go to the police and say “I think he’s a danger to himself and is planning to drive off a cliff,” or “I think he’s a danger to others and may drive into a crowd of pedestrians,” or “I think he’s planning to kill me by driving over me in a parking lot.”

Will they confiscate his knives if I say “I think he’s planning to stab me?”

No. They’ll do no such thing.

New Mexico has turned into New Jersey in just a few election cycles. This is how the left will ultimately turn America permanent “blue”.

I wish someone would drop a red flag dime on every rat bastard who voted for this thing.

The New Mexico I grew up in and enjoyed returning to has officially died. I doubt I will return for any reason other than to attend a funeral or two.

New Mexico, while physically quite beautiful, is one of the most dangerous states as far as crime. I think it ranks #1 for car theft alone. Mexican drug cartels are deeply entrenched in NM.

Well, that’s the Democrats for you.

That’s the way I am with California. I got the hell out of there in 1979, and only returned for weddings, funerals, and a couple reunions. When I was back there four years ago for my Mom’s funeral I told my sister — who still lives in California — that I would never return to California again. And I haven’t. So, I’ve missed funerals, reunions, and weddings of nieces and nephews.

That’s right, officer. Her name is Michelle Lusan Grisham. She has a high capacity scary black gun with a thirty thousand round clip, and she’s threatening to kill someone. I’d rather not give my name, thanks.
