U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham, one of only two Democratic congressmen from South Carolina, forcefully rebuked U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday, jolting the states First in the South presidential primary race just hours after the Vermont senator won in New Hampshire.
In a statement to The Post and Courier, the first-term congressman from Charleston said he does not plan on making an endorsement ahead of South Carolinas Feb. 29 primary but will defend our Lowcountry values of opportunity, pragmatism and common sense.
South Carolinians dont want socialism, Cunningham said. We want to know how you are going to get things done and how you are going to pay for them. Bernies proposals to raise taxes on almost everyone is not something the Lowcountry wants and not something Id ever support.
Asked if he would support Sanders if he becomes the Democratic presidential nominee, Cunningham rejected the questions premise.
Bernie Sanders will not be the nominee, he said.
Sanders campaign declined to respond.

That’s a seat I hope we can pick up this year. It’s a GOP leaning one.
It was Mark Sanford’s ‘til he got primaried and knocked off. Then he wouldn’t back the winner of the GOP primary. There was too much bad blood and we lost the seat.
As a Citadel grad I’d say sir, it’s time to man the east battery again.

For the moment Bernie is as target as Trump is.
One of the main reasons I chose SC as my retirement home.

What's the BIG DEAL? All the Democrats are socialists. Bernie's the one being the most honest about it.
The whole party is into Communism. They can't get it fast
enough, but don't want the public to know.
My Congressman. He is the first Dem in 40 years to represent the 1st District. He voted for impeachment. Now he is fighting to survive. I will do everything I can to defeat him in November.
I am supporting Nancy Mace, the first woman grad of the Citadel, to beat Joe Cunningham.
Cunniham is a symptom of the spread of the northern disease to SC. The 1st district had a large influx and got Californicated. He must be expunged in 2020 to nip it in the bud.
I’m wondering if this will be like another late 60s - early 70s situation where the far left took over the democrat party and the moderates left and joined the GOP - the neocons. Democrats got crushed in 4 of the next 5 elections, and their only saving grace was moderate to conservative reps in the South and Midwest, which no longer exist.
Hey Joe. They’re ALL Socialists. Bernie just says it out loud.
Cunningham voted to IMPEACH Trump. Nothing he can do to save himself.
This is what I have said - the South will not accept Bernie....(except for BLUE Virginia)....
And it won’t be Biden either.
Pete also will have a tough time in the South ....
But he sounds so “nice” as does Amy.
Pete and Amy may make it in the South. Biden is just too old and creepy and corrupt.
That’s my district and we screwed up royally. Sanford didn’t help but it’s not all on him. This district is loaded with GOPe types. It doesn’t help that Charleston is left leaning in general but the district should be ours.
Bernie didn’t win a single SC county in 2016 against the beast.
There are plenty of marxists down here but I’m not for sure how it will go down in this year’s primary. I think it will depend on what type of traction/momentum Amy or Pete can get with ads, etc.
Well, there will definitely be a lot of attention paid to the SC primary so we will all stay tuned.
(And NC has its share of Marxists too....unfortunately).
First Chrissy Matthews gets the note and starts trashing Socialism and Bernie with it, then other MSM outlets, and now even Dems are openly opposing him...... like in 2016, they have decreed that he will not be the nominee.
We have a 2nd home in that district (In fact, I’m there right now). Haven’t seen a single sign for any candidate.
