Utah to Legalize Polygamy in New Legislation
Pulpit & Pen ^ | 2/22/2020 | News Division

Posted on 02/11/2020 3:28:31 PM PST by MacNaughton

From 1852 to 1890, polygamy was regularly practiced in the Mormon church. Polygamy was first practiced by Joseph Smith after God supposedly gave him a direct revelation, but it was later defended by Apostle Orson Pratt, which gave it widespread approval until Utah territory joined the United States under the condition that polygamy would be discontinued.

A new law in Utah is set to reverse that and remove heavy criminal penalties for being married to more than one spouse. It was commonly said during the gay marriage debate in the United States that once sodomy-based unions were legalized, polygamy would follow. Although some mocked the prediction, it seems to be coming true. Utah has more than 30 thousand living in polygamous communities and they seem to have found a friend in Utah senator, Deidre Henderson.

The Republican lawmaker said, “The law is a failure. It hasn’t stopped polygamy at all and it’s actually enabled abuse to occur and remain unchecked.

Local news outlets say Henderson’s bill “has gathered significant support.” The bill was unanimously approved by a legislative panel Monday.

Go for it if you think your sanity could take it. Personally, while I love my wife of 20 years, I can easily say one wife is more than enough (and at times too much).

Mormons not impressive. First it’s ok, then it’s not in order to become a state, then it’s ok again. Make up your mind.

Why should polygamy be illegal.

Because it destabilized the society. Look at any polygamous society and you see they have a major problem as to what to do with their excess males. They have to get rid of them some ways so the old rich guys can have their pick of the sixteen year old hotties.

Which was what was happening in Utah.

For some insight as to how that worked you can read some books by Zane Gray.

It was good for the Hebrews after all.

It actually wasn't.

Every time you had someone with more then one wife you had dissension and often war among the offspring.

Polygamy was allowed but not usually practiced with one exception. If a married man died childless the next in line was suppose to marry her and give her a child that would be considered the legal child of the dead man with all the privileges that entailed.

You’re half right! Mitt’s grandfather, Gaskell Romney was born in Utah territory before statehood. He moved to Mexico in order to continue practicing plural marriage. Mitt’s father, George Wilcken Romney was born at Colonia Dublán, Chihuahua, Mexico on July 8, 1907.

Is Utah only decriminalizing, or actually legally recognizing polygamy? It’s only the second that entails legal recognition and benefits.

I once had a dinner date with a woman from Uganda. She told me her father had seven wives and she had 27 brothers and sisters.

First and only date.

No sarcasm tag? I don’t want a bunch of mormons or islamists with multiple wives and children in my country, especially if I’m forced to help pay for them.

Does not matter. The precedent is established for legal benefits with gay marriage. If decriminalized, but not legalized, then it’s only a matter of time before the precedence is used in a court case to expand the “right” to polygamy. Pandoras box is open. No way to contain anything regarding “marriage” anymore. Bigamy, polygamy, incest, marriage to minors, etc. The precedent and standard is now established... “consenting adults”. This will be expanded to minors because the precedent of minors obtaining abortions without parental consent will be the test court case that will eventually win for pedophiles. Sodom and Gomorrah is happening.

Who would WANT to live with more than one women

As I understand it, the man lives in one abode, while the wives have their own places separate from the man. The children live with the mothers. When the man wants sex, the appointed woman shows up and spends the night.

God spends a lot more time condemning divorce than He does polygamy because divorce hurts more people than polygamy.

On a large scale, polygamy leads to social instability because there aren't enough women to go around, and the men on the outside looking in are, obviously, very unhappy. They won't work hard, they are depressed (even suicidal), with increased substance abuse and crime. Polygamy is not consistent with social harmony.

This being the case, it will be coming back in this country, of course.

Unfortunately, God Given Natural Law established the union as one biological man and one biological woman, and English Common Law among others allowed for the property, financial, and family rights that followed. This was all the basis for all the state laws regarding marriage. This has now been superseded with the gay marriage pandoras box. I would agree with you that it would be preferable to have no marriage convention by any govt. authority as opposed to what we have now, which is any type of “marriage” is allowed and given govt sanction and benefits. But that is not reality. What we have now is unbridled hedonism in all forms, which is deliberately destroying the family social structure.

Historically, men died in higher numbers or preferred an irresponsible life of not caring for the children they fathered.

Welfare for fatherless children was called polygamy.

:::The precedent is established for legal benefits with gay marriage:::

It started long before that. When it become politically incorrect to shame unmarried mothers and call their children bastards.

Where there were only a few fatherless children, now there are many.

My grandmother use to say that America was going to hell in a hand basket. She was right.

They became Mexican citizens and intended NEVER to return to the US where they would go to jail for their indecent lifestyle...

If it wasn’t for the revolution in Mexico, George would have married his own several “wives” and Willard would have been born in Mexico...

No Willard’s father George Romney was born into a polygamous Mormon family/colony in Mexico...

The Romneys had already practiced polygamy for several generations in the Territory of Utah and they moved to Mexico because there were laws against polygamy in the US...Mormon men were being arrested and put in jail for polygamy...
